Road cleaning

Spillages or mud left on the road causes danger and inconvenience to other road users, so the cleaning of roads and pavements needs to be carried out promptly and regularly.

It is the responsibility of drivers to clear up spills or mud left on the road from their vehicles.

Report a problem

Failure to do so is an offence under Norfolk County Council's Bylaw 27 and also under the Highways Act 1980, which creates a number of offences in relation to mud or other material deposited on highways.  The police also have powers regarding removal of mud from roads.

As a temporary measure, warning signs should be erected before you start work. Any mud on the highway must be cleaned up at least daily and the signs removed on completion.

If we have to clean up dangerous roads, then we have the power to send the bill to those responsible as well as to prosecute them.
