Kerry Clasby & Malibu Fig Ranch @ Sterling Farms

The California fires have devastated lives, ruined businesses, burned down houses, and upended whole communities.

Among those most affected is community farmer and forager Kerry Clasby, whose entire farm and business was destroyed by the devastating fires. Kerry’s life long work as one of the pioneers of organic farming and soil cultivation is now on hold until she can raise the funds to reestablish the farm, market and community gathering area.

Clasby is a farmer, herbalist, activist, philanthropist, educator and acclaimed forager. She has built a career and community around growing and sourcing the healthiest, most biodynamic food available. Kerry is a pioneer in the field of culinary foraging and has made it her mission to provide access to organic food and the wisdom that goes along with growing these foods.

A few weeks ago, she lost everything in the Woolsey fire that tore through Malibu at unprecedented speeds. Much of her home, farm equipment, trailers, and belongings were left to ash. Now she must replant the seeds of her life and farm. Let us aid her in rising from the ashes that were left and give new meaning to regenerative agriculture.

This is a call to action. Please support us in providing funds so that Kerry can begin to rebuild her beloved farmlands and carry on the sacred art of organic farming and education. The seeds that we help sow here as a community will bear fruit for generations to come. And may these future generations know the joy of abundance and healthful living that is provided by the warriors who have dedicated their lives to the artful work of organic farming decades before it was popular.

Kerry’s farm is also a teaching farm to help showcase and help other organic farmers with the techniques and best practices to help spread the wisdom she has amassed from the master farmers for decades.
The generosity of community and funding this effort will continue the legacy of the longest running organic farm in California.

The time is now to give back to someone who has given so much of herself over the years to the Las Vegas and California community. Let us open our hearts and minds to the magic that we can create with the gift of giving this holiday season. With much gratitude, humbleness, and hope, we thank you for whatever contribution you are led to give.

THE STORY... in Kerry’s words

The Woolsey Fire Tragedy

As I sit in the dark at the beginning of a new chapter awaiting electrical connection and rain, I am able to talk about this experience for the first time. I lost everything I own and yet, serenity abounds.

A fresh harvest of farm produce had just been picked when on Wednesday afternoon Nov 8th there was talk of a fire in Thousand Oaks possibly moving directions to the Pacific coast based on the powerful Sana Anna winds Southern California was experiencing – often up to 60 miles an hour.

Preparing for such a circumstance, myself and crew began to shore up the 29127 Pacific Coast Highway property by wetting down the roofs, preparing the generator to be a back up for the water pump, removing debris, rototilling the fields and weed whacking any suspect brush and building fire walls against the eucalyptus trees.

The ‘devil winds’ (a term often used for the Sana Anna’s) did shift and the Woolsey fire would find its way to the Malibu coast and my farm.

Initially, we could smell smoke and see plumes off in the distance. They moved swiftly raging over the Santa Monica Mountains into the valleys close by. On Thursday night we remained on the farm fighting the onslaught of fire. There were embers everywhere and by putting out smothering embers; watering down as much as possible we thought this was to be a victory for the farm with little damage from the fire. But the nearby eucalyptus trees saw this differently as they caught a flame and took a path of destruction. At one point, reaching for the fire hose to find there was not a drop of water left to fight the flames, I knew this might be a sign and Friday we yield and watched the farm burn.

Resiliency Inhale

I am okay, my staff, farm animals – we are all alive and okay...And the gift of the Woolsey Fire is to choose resurrection born from the flames.

We have begun again with testimony of how to do it right, a testimony to the authentic family farm – a farm sanctuary for people plowed - planted and picked with the utmost integrity. Hosting educational classes and forums into the farm through workshops and training. To open the gates, fields, meditative garden, memorial fruit orchard and farmstand to a larger community from Los Angeles to the Internet.
