Busting myths with data: What's the true picture of migration in West and North Africa and the Mediterranean?

Discussions around migration in West and North Africa and across the Mediterranean are often riddled with misconceptions and partial representations of a complex reality. A new book published by IOM this week provides concrete information on the complexity of migration within and between these regions over the past two years, addressing many common misconceptions. 
 
“Migration in West and North Africa and across the Mediterranean: Trends, risks, development, governance” provides a comprehensive, fact-based account of migration, essential to enable more coherent, forward-looking and sustainable policy approaches, in line with the Global Compact for Migration.

Intended for policymakers and practitioners in Africa and Europe, it includes an updated, consolidated picture of key aspects of migration in these regions. 

The volume features contributions from IOM offices, other international and civil society organisations and African and European research institutes. EIU's Philippe Fargues, in his contribution, compares two tools providing knowledge to the public on migration in the region - IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix and the Mixed Migration Monitoring Mechanism (4Mi) - finding that in order to gain a balanced view on migration it's essential to collect data on all categories of migrants.

Book release: Migration in West and North Africa and across the Mediterranean
Venezuelan refugees and migrants in Latin America and the Caribbean

As of June 2020, more than 5 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants had left their country, with more than 4 million of them migrating to other countries in the region. The COVID-19 pandemic has added a new layer of complexity.

This new regional profile by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) analyses data from IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) to present a profile of displaced Venezuelans travelling across 11 countries in the region in 2019, their needs, living conditions and intentions, revealing country-to-country differences.

MGI Iraq

Migrants in Iraq, depending on their migratory status, have access to government-funded health-care services equal to that of nationals.

In addition, Iraq’s Labour Law promotes gender equality for workers, including migrant workers. Find out how in the latest MGI report. 
NEW: Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10 indicators classified

Two new indicators added to SDG 10.7: Responsible and well-managed migration policies received 'Tier 2' classification at July's Inter-Agency Expert Group on SDG Indicators:

10.7.3: Number of migrants killed while attempting to cross maritime, land and air borders

10.7.4: Proportion of the population who are refugees, by country of origin
