Overview

The West Midlands Metro opened in 1999, operating between Wolverhampton and Snow Hill station, Birmingham, connecting local population centres. In 2016 the extension through the centre of Birmingham to New Street Station opened. In 2019 the overhead wire free section to Birmingham Central Library opened, with the trams powered by on-board batteries. This webinar is hosted by the Railway Division North West Centre and will explore the history of the line, the planned extensions and touch on some technical challenges. An overview of the battery system will be provided together with the context for its selection as a technical solution.
