A Wasted Opportunity? report
An overview of the UK Government’s waste reforms: Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging, Deposit Return Scheme, the Waste Prevention Programme, and Consistent Recycling collections.
Litter can have a devastating impact on our natural world. The shocking effects of marine plastics were highlighted by David Attenborough’s Blue Planet 2 and COVID19 has given many of us a greater appreciation of the outdoors. Local green and blue spaces and treasured beauty spots have been essential during this period, in turn heightening public awareness of littering and increasing the public’s appetite to protect these spaces from pollution.
In this report, Link assess the suite of Government consultations which have been undertaken this year. The report finds that overall, although the proposed waste policies are a step in the right direction, a lack of urgency, limited details on key issues, a failure to commit to an all-in DRS, and a lack of explicit support for reuse schemes raise serious cause for concern.
