Kenilworth Road cycle route, Leamington Spa

The cycle route on the Kenilworth Road and the signed cycle route along Beauchamp Road and Binswood Avenue have now been completed.

The Kenilworth Road work started in January 2023, following final approval by Warwickshire County Council's Portfolio Holder for Transport and Planning. Phase 1 was largely completed between January and early May 2023. Some of the traffic signals upgrade works and other elements were subject to statutory consultation in June and July 2023 (see details below), and delivered in Phase 2 September and December 2023.  Crossing improvements at Cloister Crofts and Clarendon Avenue were completed in March 2024.

During Spring 2024, some minor remedial and finishing works will be undertaken.

The Kenilworth Road Cycle Route is one part of an ambitious Active Travel project to provide a 5km walking, wheeling and cycling route alongside the A452 between Kenilworth and Leamington (K2L). This includes a new foot and cycle bridge across the River Avon near Chesford Grange. The Kenilworth Road Cycle Route is the first scheme within K2L Section 1: Leamington Spa town centre to Bericote roundabout.

The Kenilworth Road Cycle Route and K2L are also part of a wider programme to improve and extend the networks of walking and cycling routes in and around Warwickshire’s towns. The aim is to create a safe and attractive environment for walking and cycling, so that they become the natural choices for shorter journeys and outdoor recreation in Warwickshire. Detailed proposals and scheme priorities are set out in the Warwickshire Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan 2024.

Making it easier for people to walk and cycle for short local journeys will also help to tackle congestion, improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions, and support an increase in physical activity.

The Kenilworth Road scheme has been funded by the Government’s ‘Getting Building Fund’, Warwickshire County Council and the 'Active Travel Fund'.

Community engagement, 2022

Community engagement on this project took place in autumn 2022. A summary of the community engagement is included as Appendix A in the Portfolio Holder report (PDF, 226 KB).

We are very grateful to residents and to local and regional stakeholder groups who provided comments and completed the survey forms. This feedback, alongside further design reviews led to a number of changes and refinements to the original proposals.
