An amazing, and equally inspiring, mural has appeared on the side of a Valleys pub - and it honours both VE Day and our NHS workers.

Images of the incredible artwork started circulating social media on Wednesday as the masterpiece appeared on the side of Morgan Wayne Constitutional Club in Trehafod, near Pontypridd.

The Valleys pub has now had a colourful transformation, as an exterior wall of the building on Fountain Street has been transformed into the impressive piece of art.

The artwork has been created to mark the importance of both VE Day and the key workers currently working to help us get through the coronavirus pandemic.

It shows a soldier and a healthcare worker standing side by side, facing their enemies.

The soldier looks ahead while the modern hero - the key worker - comes face to face with coronavirus, both preparing to fight their respective battles.

NHS and VE day mural by Tom Llewellyn ( tee2 sugars) in Trehafod.
Tom Llewellyn created the amazing mural this week

The artist behind the incredible piece, Tom Llewellyn, is a graffiti artist who also goes by the name, Tee2Sugars.

The 30-year-old, who lives in Merthyr Tydfil, explained it's his latest project to gain a lot of attention, creating a number of other pieces in the surrounding area in recent months.

Speaking to WalesOnline, he said: "The brief was something to commemorate war veterans and then the NHS key workers: the Army man against his enemy and then we have the NHS nurse fighting her enemy, which is the virus.

"It's that little twist - the fights we have been in and the sort of war we are in now."

The artist in action

The artist explained it's something he's been wanting to do as he's done a lot of work in Trehafod.

He also painted the mural on the side of Barry Sidings Cafe, in Pontypridd, which was created to support the NHS in aid of the stay at home campaign.

"The people of Trehafod - they've been brilliant," he said.

"They are all really kind to me, and think a lot of my artwork and things.

"People in the streets - they have been coming on their daily walks to see it asking if they can post it on social media."

He said this particular piece took him around a day and a half to complete.

He kept working until around 9.30pm on Wednesday (April 6) when the piece was finally complete and he was happy for it to be shared with the world.

As he talked about how much his work has been appreciated in the area, he jokingly added: "I think I'll be painting all the buildings around here.

"It's been great."
