UNHCR kicks off #EveryoneCounts campaign at first-ever Global Refugee Forum

This week, the first-ever Global Refugee Forum convened — a gathering of refugees, UN leaders, international institutions, business leaders, heads of state and civil society representatives to discuss their ongoing commitment to supporting refugees. 

Over the last decade, the world has seen a surge in displacement, with over 70 million people being forced to flee their homes because of war, conflict and persecution. More than 25 million are refugees who have been forced to cross international borders to find safety. 

“This week, at the first ever Global Refugee Forum, we must focus our efforts in the coming decade on building upon what we have learned and committing action to support refugees and the countries and communities hosting them. This Forum is an opportunity to attest our collective commitment to the Global Compact on Refugees and rally behind the aspirations of the Sustainable Development Goals of leaving no one behind,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. 

UNHCR also launched its #EveryoneCounts campaign at the Global Refugee Forum. This social campaign is backed by Goodwill Ambassadors, refugee advocates and high-profile supporters around the world who want to share the positive stories of refugees. 

The campaign’s core message is that “everyone has a role to play” when it comes to helping refugees. By  working together to raise refugee voices, everyone can play a part in combating xenophobia, intolerance and fear. Doing so also empowers refugees and gives them the opportunity to reach their full potential and have a positive impact on the world around them. 

Cate Blanchett, a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, is featured in the campaign’s kick-off video alongside other celebrity supporters. “At the start of the Global Refugee Forum today, we stand at a pivotal moment in history. UNHCR is urgently calling for increased commitment and support that will help every refugee – and the communities they are living in - to not just survive, but to thrive,” she said.
