Jordan

Jordan is one of the countries most affected by the Syria crisis, hosting the world’s second-highest number of refugees per capita. Some 730,000 refugees are registered with UNHCR, predominantly from Syria, with large groups from Iraq, Yemen, Sudan, and Somalia. Some 81 per cent live in urban areas outside of refugee camps.

Jordan continues to be an exemplary host, including refugees in key national systems such as healthcare and education. Syrian refugees are also allowed to work in certain sectors, giving them access to livelihood opportunities.

UNHCR in Jordan works closely with the Government of Jordan and numerous other national and international partners in providing protection and assistance to refugees, asylum-seekers, and Jordanian communities affected by the presence of refugees. UNHCR also provides over 200,000 vulnerable refugees in camps and host communities with regular cash assistance to support them in meeting their most basic needs.

Over the years, UNHCR, with the support of the government, donors, and partners, has led on several innovative solutions to facilitate refugee access to services. For instance, UNHCR has recently partnered with a number of actors to roll-out the distribution of cash assistance through mobile wallets. With the vast majority of refugees in Jordan already enrolled in this technology, refugees are granted more flexibility, security, and control over the assistance they receive from UNHCR.

UNHCR maintains a robust presence in Jordan, with some 500 staff, running three main offices across the country – Amman, Irbid and Mafraq. It also has presence in Jordan’s two main refugee camps, Azraq and Zaatari, where UNHCR leads a range of activities and services in the refugee camps, including camp coordination, protection and outreach, community services, livelihoods, shelter, and energy.

After over a decade of Syria crisis, the refugee response in Jordan is facing a funding crisis. UNHCR is actively working with the Jordanian government, partners, and donors to ensure continued access to services and sustained humanitarian and development support to the refugee response.
