Women really are better at reading people’s emotions than men, scientists say.

They are better than men at putting themselves in others’ shoes and imagining what the other person is thinking or feeling, according to a study of 300,000 people in 57 countries by Cambridge University. Scientists found that women scored higher than men on the widely used Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, a method for measuring cognitive empathy.

The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the largest of its kind to date and offers the most comprehensive evidence that the phenomenon exists.
