Hundreds of millions of people around the world are expected to watch the coronation of King Charles III.

Craig Foster, the new face of Australia’s republican movement, will not be one of them. “Like many Australians, I see Charles as completely irrelevant to contemporary Australian life,” he said.

The former captain of the national men’s Socceroos football team was hardly likely to bring out the bunting at his Sydney home.

Nearly 25 years ago, Foster played a minor role in the failed referendum campaign to ditch the monarchy, when he was still patrolling the midfield for Crystal Palace Football Club.

The movement lost momentum after the referendum defeat in 1999 but was revived last year by the election of the republican Labor politician Anthony Albanese
