A village primary school is beating the energy crisis by tapping into an ancient thermal spring once prized by the Victorians.

The 200 primary school pupils in the village of Taff’s Well are being kept “toasty warm” by the heat from the only thermal spring found in Wales.

With a constant heat of 21C, the thermal waters near Cardiff are being used in a series of heat pumps to replace the gas heating system at Ffynnon Taf Primary School, allowing it to save money on heating bills.

Carbon-14 isotope dating suggests that the rain which feeds the well fell at least 5,000 years ago, when brown bears roamed the forests of the south Wales valleys.

By using the thermal waters Ffynnon Taf Primary School will also save 37 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year as part of a £3 million renovation
