The Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine could trigger one of the world’s largest refugee crises with five million people displaced, the US has warned.

A state of emergency was declared by the Ukrainian government yesterday as it called up reservists to confront further Russian aggression and before explosions were heard before dawn across Ukraine including in the capital Kyiv and the eastern port city of Mariupol.

Fears of all-out war increased after a night of heavy shelling from the Russian-controlled areas Donetsk and Luhansk, including attacks using Grad rockets by both pro-Kremlin and Ukrainian forces. At least one Ukrainian soldier was killed and another injured. The government in Kyiv was also hit by a cyberattack.
