The nursing and midwifery regulator has rejected calls to withdraw from a diversity scheme run by Stonewall.

In December the Nursing and Midwifery Council received a letter co-ordinated by Woman’s Place UK, an advocacy group, raising concerns about its membership of Stonewall’s diversity champions programme.

The 719 nurses and midwives who signed the letter said they were concerned about Stonewall’s stance on a number of medical issues, and its attitude towards people who disagreed with it. The issues included medicating children with gender dysphoria, and the view that patients should be able to access single-sex wards according to gender identity.

They said the affiliation posed a “specific risk to the reputation of nurses and our ability to work within our code”.
