Laura’s story: jailed for having an abortion in Britain

After the traumatic birth of a stillborn foetus, police arrived at a young mother’s hospital bedside to question her. Soon she would begin a two-year sentence behind bars. Hannah Al-Othman reports

Laura* was at university. She was 20, already the mother of a two-year-old daughter. Her studies were going well. Indeed, she would, eventually, go on to graduate. But not before serving a two-year prison sentence.

“I’d never even had a detention at school. It was awful,” she says now of her time inside. “I have seen things that no human being should ever see. The quality of life that those women have is disgusting. And I would not wish it on any single human being.
