Anti-racism campaigners have reported more than 20 Tory councillors to the party’s Islamophobia inquiry as polling suggests nearly half of all members think Islam is “incompatible” with British life.

Hope not Hate identified dozens of Tory members using social media to express anti-Muslim sentiment in its submission to the inquiry, set up last year to examine claims of discrimination in the party.

The group also commissioned a YouGov poll of more than 1,200 Conservative members that found widespread distrust of Islam and Muslims among grassroots Tory supporters.

The poll found 43 per cent had broadly positive feelings towards Muslims, compared with 73 per cent feeling positive towards Hindus and 75 per cent for Sikhs.
