Green activists split over radical tactics of Just Stop Oil

Climate protest leaders are split over how extreme their tactics should get to grab the public’s attention.

Roger Hallam, the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion who has left to co-ordinate behind the scenes for the more radical Just Stop Oil, has urged protesters to “upset people”, arguing that otherwise “nothing happens”.

However, Rupert Read, the former spokesman for XR, is calling for the group to be more moderate to attract more people to its cause.

Just Stop Oil, an offshoot of XR, has carried out actions recently including throwing tomato soup over a Van Gogh painting and scaling the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge at the Dartford Crossing.
