Railway workers will continue to strike if the government does not meet their demands, the head of the RMT vowed today.

The union is going ahead with strikes at Network Rail and across 13 railway operators on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday after talks over a multi-year pay deal collapsed.

It is protesting against job cuts, pay proposals and changes to pension plans.

Asked whether there would be more strikes throughout the year Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT, told Sky News: “If there is not a settlement, we will continue our campaign.” He added: “I think there are going to be many unions that are balloting across the country because people can’t take it any more.
