Capita has admitted that a small amount of client or staff data was stolen in a cyberattack, amid accusations that it has been too slow to disclose the scale of the breach.

The company, one of Britain’s biggest outsourcers handling public sector contracts worth billions of pounds, said about 4 per cent of its IT systems had been hacked and as a result there was “limited data exfiltration” from its customers, suppliers or staff.

This is at odds with its original statement when the attack was revealed, which said: “Our investigation has shown no colleague, client or customer data has been compromised.”

Hackers broke into the company’s network on or around March 22, Capita had revealed previously, an attack that was “interrupted” on March 31
