Plan to fly illegal Channel arrivals out of UK within seven days would cost £100,000 per asylum seeker

Ministers are hoping to seal an agreement to fly Channel-crossing migrants to Albania as a central measure to end the crisis.

Under the plan, arrivals on Britain’s beaches in small boats would be taken to the country within seven days for off-shore processing.

The prospect of a long wait there while claims for asylum in Britain were evaluated will act as a deterrent against making the crossing, it is thought.

It comes as footage emerged of migrants applauding as they launched dinghies off the coast of France to cross the Channel, with French police officers appearing to stand by and film the scene with their phones.
