Cancer deaths will rise for the first time in decades unless urgent action is taken to address the problems caused by the pandemic, experts warn.

A group of 47 British cancer charities has warned that unless the government provides the NHS with more finance and staff to clear the cancer backlog, the death rate will rise in this country.

The charities are speaking collectively for the first time as new estimates show that 44,000 patients across the UK should have started cancer treatment in 2020 but did not due to delays caused by the pandemic.

In a statement released to BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat, the charities warn that these people are “in the community, living with cancer without knowing it”.
