Together Wherever

It’s been a rollercoaster ride this year, with lots of challenges thrown your way. We know that your daily lives may have changed slightly (or quite a bit!) but we wanted to reach out and let you know that we are here for you. We're in this together - Together, Wherever.

Update from Charlotte, your President Welfare & Inclusivity

Being in lockdown or studying outside of the UK has been a lonely and isolating period for so many of us, which is why our Together Wherever campaign has been providing information and opportunities for students to re-connect. We’ve refreshed a range of resources, including information around loneliness and personal safety, and will be adding more opportunities to the page including free yoga sessions, free interactive events on our Native platform, and exciting opportunities to explore your employability.

Keep an eye out for live conversations with our Part-Time Officers coming soon and, if you want to get in touch, just drop us a line. Don’t forget, we are all in this together, wherever we are. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Online Events

Our student groups cater for a variety of interests. Take a look at the full list of clubs and societies to find your tribe.

Don’t forget that we’ve got Yoga and Pilates sessions running every week. We recently teamed up with the Exe-Fal Yoga society to offer you free sessions!

We've also joined forces with Native to bring you a one-stop-shop of virtual activities and events to offer safe ways for you to meet people and try new things. From virtual pub quizzes to crafternoons and speed mate-ing, the options are endless!

Fancy a chat?

Your SU Presidents will be available for an informal chat with any student who would like a natter over the phone. A simple conversation with someone can be such a great way to take some time out and break up the day. The SU Presidents are also a pretty friendly bunch who could talk until the cows come home…

Request a Call Back

Student Support Services also offer regular Time to Talk sessions to discuss things like homesickness, relationship break ups, problems with house mates, and feeling stressed with course work or exams. This service is for students who do not need specialist support such as counselling, but would benefit from a structured opportunity to talk to someone and to have a safe space to do this.

Dealing with loneliness

We know it's been a frustrating year. New students have had less opportunities to make friends, returning students have found it hard to maintain contact with old friends, and engaging with your coursemates in a virtual room doesn't exactly allow for small talk. There are no chance encounters at the coffee shop or waiting in line at the bus stop... So just how can we help combat loneliness?

Living in Halls?

We know some of you may be feeling more isolated than usual as not everyone has returned to their accommodation. To help you during this time, we would like to invite you to join ‘ResLife Social’. This involves one of the ResLife team getting in touch with you to catch up socially, make sure you are doing okay and aware of the support available. The ResLife team is a friendly group of fellow students with a good understanding and knowledge of student life. They will also be able to tell you about upcoming online events and how to sign up. The events are fun, led by the ResLife team, and a great way to get involved with other students during this time. Chatting to other students is a great way to support one another. If you are interested in this service, please complete this opt-in form.

Where can I find the most up to date Coronavirus information?

How can I look after my mental health & wellbeing?

Looking after YOU

This has never happened before, so it’s okay if you’re not being the most productive human in the history of the world - even just getting out of bed is a massive step. The most important thing you can do during this time is to look after your mental health.

Self-Care Tips

  • The news can be scary, so think about how long you’re spending reading it. If you’re finding that social media and the news is making you feel anxious, then consider taking time away from it or give yourself a set time to check the news each day.

  • Reimagine and stick to a daily routine – even just getting out of bed at the same time every day will help to create some stability. This routine won’t look like a typical day out of lockdown, and that’s okay.

  • Try to continue activities that you enjoy – if you’re used to attending a society every week, see if they’re running any events online. Or if you love going to the gym, try out some home workouts.

  • Get fresh air regularly – if you can, push yourself to go for your daily outing, staying at home all day can seem all-too-tempting, but the more you get outside the better you’ll feel. If not, even just opening the windows will help!

  • Be kind to yourself – there are so many unknowns at the moment, so feeling anxious, scared, sad or angry are all normal emotions. Give yourself some slack – no-one’s expecting you to keep up your normal life patterns.

Study Tips

  • Embed time bound activities into your day – whether its promising to call a friend or family member at a certain time, or joining a live class. This will help you prioritise your work, keep to deadlines and limit procrastination.

  • Create a workspace that you feel comfortable in and will enjoy studying in – adding plants, stationary and your favourite course content will help get you in the zone

  • Plan out your study goals for the day, or the week, or even the month – different timescales will work for different people, so try them all out and see which feels right and don’t forget to make sure that they’re realistic!

  • Utilise awesome web-based study techniques – from Trello Boards, to online mind-maps to checklists.

  • Reward yourself – studying during a pandemic, especially under lockdown, is a huge achievement! If you’ve managed to get just even some of your work done, then celebrate that with something you enjoy.

How can I look after my physical health?

Physical health is as important as our mental health and wellbeing. Here are our 6 top tips to living well:

Where can I find information on academic support?

Where can I find online activities and opportunities?

As well as student led events taking place (see section above) if you are looking for other online activities or opportunities it's really worth checking out our 'Lend a Hand' page. There you'll find a range of volunteering opportunities that you can get involved in from the comfort of your own home! You might also like to browse the volunteering section in the Student Opps area of the SU website where you can find a huge list of external volunteering providers.

How can I give feedback on my experience?

There are several ways that you can give your feedback to help make the student experience better.

ROS: One method you can use to submit feedback is through the Rep Online System (ROS). ROS is a simple system for all students and Reps, where you can anonymously submit suggestions about anything (and we mean anything) to do with your university experience - from catering, to accommodation, to the Students' Union, to your course, to how your work is assessed. ROS helps us to collect all of this important feedback in one place, which helps us to better represent your student voice across all levels of your university experience. What is it YOU want to say? Make a submission to ROS at www.thesu.org.uk/ROS

Student Reps:Student Reps are vital in making sure the student voice is heard at every level of the University decision making process. Giving your feedback to student Reps is the most effective way of making positive changes to your learning experience, for you, and your peers. Think there’s something on your course that needs improving? You can give feedback on anything from course assessments to wellbeing and support. Find your Student Rep now at www.thesu.org.uk/FindMyRep

Alternatively you can always drop us an email over to info@thesu.org.uk
