LILY, 71, MURDERED AND DUMPED IN WHEELIE BIN; Police quiz girls aged 14 and 15.

Defenceless pensioner Lily Lilley was smothered, bundled into a wheelie bin and dumped in a canal.

The 71-year-old was the third in a series of brutal killings of old people within a few days.

Last night, two teenage girls were being quizzed in connection with the killing.

Reclusive Lily, of Failsworth, Manchester, who hadn't been seen since last Wednesday, was suffocated in her home before being dragged through the streets in the bin.

Half a mile from her semi-detached home, Lily was thrown into the dirty rat-infested canal.

Police found her body just hours after neighbours reported her missing on Sunday.

An underwater search team later recovered the bin from the bottom of the Rochdale Canal.

Last night, detectives were continuing to quiz the two girls, aged 14 and 15, about Lily's death.

Lily, who had lived alone for 12 years since the death of her husband, was constantly tormented by local youths.

One neighbour said: "All the kids tormented her rotten and they were always round at her house asking for sweets."

Another neighbour said: "She was a bit of a recluse and a bit strange. She was tormented by kids, they'd bang on the door ask for money, break the windows and take the mickey ."

In a separate case it was revealed that 86-year-old Rene Swanwick, who was stabbed to death in her home, was murdered for her toaster and kettle during a burglary gone wrong.

The widow suffered multiple stab wounds in the attack at her ground-floor flat in West Bridgford, Nottingham, last week.

Police said Mrs Swanwick died after disturbing intruders.

Detective Superintendent Colin Warburton, who is leading the murder hunt, said the killer or killers would have been bloodstained after the brutal attack.

He said they escaped with a kettle, a toaster and a small clock radio.

He added: "It was a particularly savage attack."

Her god-daughter Sharon Hammond, 44, said: "The things that have been taken are meaningless and stupid. If somebody had come to her and said they wanted something she would have given it to them."

A post mortem examination confirmed yesterday that Roman Catholic priest Father Paul Orchard, 80, of Brandhall, West Midlands, was also killed by multiple stab wounds. Police last night charged a 31- year-old man with his murder.
