Applying for a Research Degree

If you have been in contact with a member of academic staff and are ready to make your application, please go straight to the Online Application Portal.

You can read the Guidance notes on completing the application here.

The Application Process

Eligibility: To enter the PhD programme you are expected to hold a master's degree in a relevant subject area or in some cases, be able to provide evidence of equivalent experience and learning acquired in a professional context.

English Language: Applicants whose first language is not English must satisfy the English Language Requirements for research degree level study, detailed here.

Prospective students must make contact with the relevant academic faculty/school and receive their encouragement before submitting an application. This is to ensure that appropriate supervisory expertise is available for the proposed research project. A list of academic staff and their research interests is available via the relevant Research Centre or Academic Faculty/School. If you are unable to determine the most appropriate supervisor for your research project, please contact the relevant faculty/school Research Degrees Convenor, or the Graduate School will be happy to assist you. Email us at pgresearch@roehampton.ac.uk

You will be required to submit the following supporting documentation

  • Copies of academic certificates or transcripts
  • Copies of professional qualification certificates (if relevant)
  • Test results to demonstrate your proficiency in English (if required)
  • References from academic referees.

Once received, your application will be downloaded by the Graduate School and reviewed prior to passing to the academic faculty/school. Should any documents be missing, you will be contacted via email, by the Graduate School. If the outstanding documents are not received within four weeks, your application will be closed.
Please note that if you do not include the name of a member of academic staff with whom you have discussed your proposal, your application will not be processed. Contact us if you need help with this: pgresearch@roehampton.ac.uk

You may be asked for an example of your written work (for example, a chapter from an MA thesis). Incomplete applications and/or applications which do not name a faculty/school contact may be rejected. If your application and references are satisfactory and appropriate supervisory support is available, an interview will be arranged with you. If successful you will be offered a place on your chosen MPhil/PhD programme.
