The Centre for Research in Linguistics provides a forum for sharing and enhancing existing excellence in Linguistics within the School of Arts, English and Languages, across a range of units including English, French, Irish and Translation/Interpreting. Its members cover a breadth of specialisms including diachronic and synchronic fields in English, French and Irish, and translation theory and practice: lexicography and syntax; sociolinguistics; language variation and change; historical linguistics;  language policy; onomastics; discourse analysis; languages education;  phonetics and phonology; clinical speech and language;  critical discourse analysis, stylistics and pragmatics, and  theoretical and comparative syntax.  It exploits fully the cross-disciplinary potential of Linguistics within and beyond the School of AEL, including cross-School supervision of PhD projects. In 2016, colleagues in Linguistics received recognition from the ESRC’s ‘NINE’ Doctoral Training Programme to offer ESRC training for Doctoral students, and we are also accredited within the Northern Bridge Consortium.
