We are living in an age of deception yet only slowly are citizens awakening to the reality of 21st Century warfare. Disinformation and influence campaigns present some of the most complex and rapidly evolving challenges in our time, not least for researchers, civil society, and policymakers, but critically for you&nbsp;and me, as invisible, targeted manipulation has harmful effects for citizens. Manipulative campaigns enabled by Big Tech and influence actors have real-world impact – whether it’s inciting violence, widening inequality, enabling genocide, or burying environmental disaster. Viral falsehoods can be a real threat - but responses must also respect our human rights. So how do we understand the challenge we are facing? And are governments and 'Big Tech' getting that balance right? <a href="http://emma-briant.co.uk/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">I am a leading scholar</a> trying to answer questions like these. To do this I need your help to fund my work researching, analyzing and writing to educate the world about propaganda.&nbsp; <a href="https://www.propagandamachine.tech/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">My work on firms like Cambridge Analytica</a> helped expose how an industry was shaping minds and behaviors with improperly obtained data. There's very little known about the dark infrastructure and actors behind manipulation and persuasion and this is&nbsp;an ongoing challenge for assessing the role of different actors and legislating for a more transparent, safe and ethical information environment. I'm continuing and expanding this difficult research to produce multiple books, media and publications.
