The burden of, resources available to manage, and outcomes associated with acute pediatric critical illness in resource-limited settings have not been well characterized. Thus, the overall health impact of acute pediatric critical illness in resource-limited settings is not known.
Global PARITY (Pediatric Acute cRitical Illness sTudY) is an international point prevalence study of acutely ill or injured children presenting to an emergency department at a hospital located in a resource-limited setting.
This study is being conducted by the Global Health subgroup of the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) Network to determine the burden of pediatric acute, critical illness in resource-limited settings. We are looking for international sites to partner with where primary data collection will take place. This study will include pediatric patients (aged 28 days to 14 years) from hospitals around the world with screening on 4 separate study dates over one year. Data collection will include a baseline case report form on the screening day, followed by a brief daily case report form for up to 7 days if the child is hospitalized to capture resource utilization, and a final case report form recording the child’s hospital outcome. Screening and data collection will begin in 2021.
