Awards: Two companies offered acreage to store CO2

Today, two companies have been offered exploration license for CO2 storage in an acreage in the Norwegian part of the North Sea.
An announcement regarding this acreage was made in April this year. The authorities have considered applications from three companies.
This is the third time acreage is awarded to store CO2 pursuant to the CO2 Storage Regulations*. This is the fourth acreage awarded to store CO2 on the Norwegian continental shelf.
*Regulation No. 1517 of 5 December 2014 relating to exploitation of subsea reservoirs on the continental shelf for storage of CO2 and relating to transport of CO2 on the continental shelf (the CO2 Storage Regulations).

Equinor has completed an appraisal well (7324/7-4) on the Wisting discovery in the Barents Sea. The objective was to acquire data on the reservoir and cap rock, for use in ongoing evaluation and development of the discovery.

In June 2022, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate published data collected up to 2022. The Directorate is now releasing deep sea data gathered from 2022 to 2024.

The Johan Castberg ship will soon be heading north. With the ship in place, the plan is to have three producing fields in the Barents Sea by the end of the year.
