Chelsea legend Petr Cech was forced to intervene as tensions threatened to boil over during a European Super League protest outside Stamford Bridge.

Thousands of fans flocked to the ground on Tuesday afternoon to voice their opposition to the Blues signing up as a founding member of the breakaway league.

An angry confrontation at the entrance to Stamford Bridge saw the team bus blocked as it arrived ahead of the Premier League clash with Brighton.

"Let people sort this out, but this is not the thing," Cech - who is a performance and technical advisor at Chelsea - could be heard saying in a video posted on Twitter.

Cech pleaded with fans to let the team bus into Stamford Bridge

"Let the people in. Let the bus go in. Give people time."

It later emerged that Chelsea's players were stuck at their hotel due to protests. According to The Athletic's Simon Johnson, Brighton couldn't arrive at the stadium on time either.

It's understood this is why Cech came out to plead with the fans to move along and allow the team coaches to make their way inside the concourse at the Blues' west London ground.

Fans only grew in number as the evening wore on, stopping cars from travelling down the Fulham Road as they made their feelings clear with chants of "f*** the Super League".

The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust slammed their club over their involvement in the European Super League in a statement released on Monday.

"They say expect the unexpected, but on Sunday night the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust, our members and football supporters across the world have experienced the ultimate betrayal," reads the statement.

"Chelsea Football Club, along with eleven of the top European sides have announced their intention to establish a ‘Super League’.

"This is a decision of greed to line the pockets of those at the top and it has been made with no consideration for the loyal supporters, our history, our future or the future of football in this country.

"This is unforgivable. Enough is enough."

Chelsea are one of the Premier League's 'Big Six' along with Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City, each of whom are founding members of the European Super League.

Three teams from Italy - Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus - and three from Spain - Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid - also make up the original dozen of founders.
