A 'blindfolded' 17-year-old girl crashed her truck into a car while doing the Bird Box challenge despite Netflix and police calling for an end to the craze.

The challenge was inspired by the new Netflix film in which characters, including a mum played by Sandra Bullock, wear blindfolds to avoid seeing a strange force that causes people to kill themselves.

But the craze has proved to be dangerous, with people posting videos on social media showing them moving around while blindfolded.

This week, a US teen's stunt went horribly wrong when she covered her eyes while driving and crashed into a car after veering into oncoming traffic.

Police say the girl was driving this pickup truck with her eyes covered

Netflix and police have urged people not to try the challenge because they could injure themselves or someone else, or worse.

In the crash in Layton, Utah, the 17-year-old girl pulled her beanie down over her eyes and began driving.

Police Lt Travis Lyman told KSL TV: "Apparently, as a part of this Bird Box Challenge, [the driver] used her beanie to pull over her eyes as she was driving on Layton Parkway, and she ended up losing control of her car and skidded into the westbound lanes of Layton Parkway and hit another car and ended up hitting a light pole as well."

The force tweeted photos of the crash scene, writing: "Bird Box Challenge while driving...predictable result.

"This happened on Monday as a result of the driver covering her eyes while driving on Layton Parkway.

"Luckily no injuries."

Lt Layton told KUTV: “Honestly, I’m almost embarrassed to have to say ‘Don’t drive with your eyes covered’, but you know apparently we do have to say that.

“The stakes are just so high and it’s just such a potentially dangerous thing as it is: to try and do it in that way is inexcusable.

"It really puts everybody at risk.”

Police said the girl was driving a pickup truck with a 16-year-old passenger.

She initially told officers that she was distracted while talking to her friend.

But police continued to question her and witnesses, and they determined that the girl was trying the Bird Box challenge.

She could be charged with reckless driving.

As Bird Box challenge videos began to pop up all over social media, Netflix urged people not to join the craze, saying they could injure themselves.

It tweeted: "Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE.

"We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes."

Boy and Girl are two young characters from the film. They join the mum portrayed by Ms Bullock on a dangerous river journey in a bid to reach safety.

All three are blindfolded because it's the only way to protect themselves from the unseen presence which has driven most of society to suicide.

The internet craze has seen blindfolded participants walk into walls, or attempt to walk down streets while unable to see.

Some people have even posted videos showing themselves driving while blindfolded - but police have told people to cut it out before someone is killed.

Bird Box has been one of Netflix's biggest hits, with tens of millions of steams despite mixed reviews.
