We have been made well aware in recent weeks that Christmas will be a much different affair this year.

But that hasn't stopped many of us still wanting to get into the festive spirit and bring some joy back into our lives.

So it was good news for children - and probably parents everywhere - when Good Morning Britain confirmed that Santa WILL still be able to visit this year. Phew.

It started when GMB hosts Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins asked expert Professor Emer Shelley whether it would be safe for Santa to come into people's houses this December.

"Yes, we've considered whether or not Santa Claus can travel this Christmas," she began her response. "It's a serious issue because we've just been talking about travel between countries, and Santa Claus of course travels across the world.

"Is he at risk of transmitting the virus really right around the world?"

It was all going well but it all came with a slight dig at poor Father Christmas.

"And is there a risk to Santa Claus himself? Because he's not exactly thin. In fact, if he were to be having a medical exam, he would be considered clinically obese.

Professor Emer Shelley made the comments while on the ITV show

"That puts him at higher risk of diabetes, of high blood pressure and so if he were to catch Covid then he would be at risk of getting a very serious version of it and being put in intense care."

This left viewers baffled at the bizarre moment.

"Did she just fat shame Santa?!! #GMB" questioned one.

Another said: "Fat shaming is inappropriate at any time, but discussing it relating to Santa is sacrilege!!"

"OMG this woman is roasting Santa and calling him clinically obese," added a third.

Another comment read: "Cracking up @benshephard @CharlotteHawkns and remote guests trying to keep a straight face talking about Santa #GMB."

Ben did try and save the conversation calling Santa a 'key worker' and some viewers loved the explanation.

"That was really lovely to hear that scientist say that Santa can still visit kids this Christmas," one said.

Another commented: "#GMB that was really lovely to hear that scientist say that although Santa could do with loosing weight."

"@GMB for the lady just talking about Santa! It’s not just us oldies who watch TV in the mornings, got a relieved little girl now," a third said with clapping emojis.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
