Nestlé is taking action against climate change's impact on coffee cultivation. By harnessing advanced data science and artificial intelligence, Nestlé experts collaborated with several academic and research partners to explore ways to select and breed climate-resilient coffee plants. To secure a sustainable future for coffee and support farmers, Nestlé's plant scientists have created an advanced arabica reference genome. This publicly available digital database enables analysis of different coffee traits, such as yield, cherry size, disease resilience, and flavor characteristics. Using this, new, high-yielding arabica varieties with enhanced disease and drought resistance can be developed. This groundbreaking work has been published in Nature Genetics, marking a significant milestone in coffee plant research. Additionally, Nestlé plant experts are already applying this knowledge and collaborating with farmers in key coffee sourcing origins. Breakthrough findings to improve muscle health and function during aging We are proud to share our recent publication in Nature Metabolism, which shows that the natural molecule trigonelline present in coffee, fenugreek and the human body cross-talks with cellular hallmarks of aging. A research consortium led by scientists of Nestlé Research in Switzerland and the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine discovered that levels of trigonelline were lower in older people with sarcopenia. In the paper the scientists concluded that trigonelline stimulates mitochondrial activity and contributes to maintaining muscle function during aging. With this it could potentially help slow age-related muscle loss. This research was made possible thanks to the international collaboration with Universities of Southampton, Melbourne, Tehran, South Alabama, Toyama and Copenhagen, and builds on previous studies of Nestlé Research. ➡ Link to the paper: https://lnkd.in/eR9wdzxG ➡ Read more: https://lnkd.in/ey5YFYSR #NestléRD #NestléResearch #HealthyAging
