This approach underscores the importance of meaningful steps that strengthen community foundations and promote sustainability. The role of governments across Africa and the global South is crucial in this narrative. Their responsibility extends beyond endorsement to empowerment. Initiatives that support grassroots innovation—like transforming #waste into valuable resources—require robust support and actionable policies that can extend local successes to broader economic benefits. Real progress occurs when small-scale impacts aggregate, creating robust communities and sustainable development. Let’s champion these environmental innovations and advocate for policies that amplify their effects, transforming each modest achievement into a substantial stride forward to ensure no one is left behind.

In the heart of Africa, the transition from old to new illuminates a path forward. Growing up in Jinkfuin Kom, my nights were spent under the dim glow of kerosene lamps. Though they lit our pages, they cast a long shadow on our health and environment. Today, we are witnessing a transformative shift. The perils of kerosene—emitting pollutants linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases—are giving way to the promise of clean energy. With solar panels and wind turbines, we are not only lighting our homes but powering our futures. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) are spearheading efforts to reduce black carbon and other pollutants, emphasizing sustainable energy under Sustainable Development Goal 7. Countries are embracing e-mobility, revolutionizing transportation with electric motorcycles, showcasing how small changes can have a profound environmental impact. Let's champion these clean, sustainable technologies to ensure that no child has to compromise their health for light. During the GET Consortium Webinar Series on the 27th of March, 2024, I had the privilege of addressing a topic that resonates deeply with the current global health landscape: "Reimagining the Role of Big Data for Infectious Disease Surveillance and Control in Africa: The Entry of Environmental Monitoring and Early Warning for the Environment Approach." In my discourse, I drew attention to the undeniable interconnection between our health and the environment. Highlighting how environmental degradation, climate change, and biodiversity loss exacerbate health risks. The crux of my message focused on the transformative potential of #bigdata in bridging the gap between environmental health risks and actionable solutions. I illuminated how #bigdata, through its extensive reach and real-time capabilities, has already begun reshaping our response to health crises. However, I argued that the application of big data in #healthsurveillance in #Africa has been largely one-dimensional, focusing more on identifying challenges rather than unlocking socioeconomic opportunities that could inspire the adoption of innovative solutions. This is where the Early Warning for Environment (EWE) approach emerges as a game-changer, offering a holistic framework that not only identifies environmental health risks but also aligns them with actionable solutions and investment enablers, thereby facilitating a comprehensive response to health challenges. In bringing this vision to life, I proposed a multi-faceted strategy: 1. **Integrate Health Surveillance and Environmental Monitoring**: Utilize big data to combine health surveillance with #environmentalmonitoring, ensuring that #data on #pollution, #biodiversity, and #climatechange inform health planning and response strategies. 2. **Empower Communities through Citizen Science**: Leverage community engagement and citizen science to fill data gaps, enabling local populations to contribute valuable insights into environmental health risks and potential interventions. 3. **Diversify Data Sources for Comprehensive Monitoring**: Combine various data sources, from primary to tertiary, to enrich environmental monitoring and health surveillance systems, reducing costs and enhancing efficiency. 4. **Enhance Training Systems to Bridge Environmental and Health Knowledge Gaps**: Prioritize the integration of environmental health risks and solutions into healthcare professional training, adopting a One-Health approach in curricula. 5. **Translate One-Health Policies into Tangible Investments**: Identify and promote investment opportunities in One-Health solutions, highlighting the economic benefits of sustainable environmental and health interventions. 6. **Utilize Artificial Intelligence for Advanced Monitoring**: Deploy AI technologies to refine environmental monitoring and health surveillance, enhancing the analysis of diverse data sources to identify optimal risk management and solution implementation strategies.
