🔆 EUEA brings together our Members with IFIs to facilitate investment opportunities in the Ukrainian energy sector This week, we held a Members-only meeting with Caitlin Candee, the Finance and Political Risk Insurance Officer at the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. Our conversation focused on the DFC products for financing and insuring energy projects. Here's a glimpse of what we uncovered: 🛡️ Political Risk Insurance: DFC goes the extra mile by extending coverage not only to foreign investors but also to Ukrainian investors. They safeguard against risks such as expropriation, political violence, and currency controls. DFC's political risk insurance doesn't prioritize bankability, potentially making it accessible to projects that may not qualify for debt financing. 💰 Debt Funding: With a robust track record in energy investments, DFC can finance up to 100% of required debt sans stringent caps. They favor projects with secure cash flows, like power purchase agreements (PPAs), to mitigate risks effectively. 🤝 Technical Assistance: DFC offers invaluable support for the nascent stages of energy projects, sharing costs with sponsors and fostering trust along the way. 💼 Equity Capacity: While less frequent for Ukraine, DFC also keeps an eye out for direct equity investments into companies or projects. 📎 The evaluation process includes factors like creditworthiness, environmental and social impacts, and KYC procedures, aligning seamlessly with IFC performance standards for renewable energy projects. 🇺🇦 DFC's Presence in Ukraine: Since January, DFC has stationed a team in Ukraine, ensuring direct communication and unwavering support for projects. At EUEA, we're committed to bridging our Members with diverse stakeholders to foster collaborative efforts towards the sustainable reconstruction of Ukraine through private investments. 🌿 EUEA Members Exclusive Discussion Recap: "Insurance of Green Projects in Ukraine"  At EUEA, our commitment to keeping our members informed and empowered in the evolving landscape of Ukrainian markets remains unwavering. Our recent Members-only discussion delved into the crucial topic of "Insurance of Green Projects in Ukraine," shedding light on navigating renewable energy companies amidst ongoing challenges. 👩💼 We extend our gratitude to speakers from our member companies, Oleksandr Laukhart from GrECo Group Ukraine and Anzhelika Livitska (nee Shtukaturova) Livitska from Arzinger, whose expertise enriched our dialogue and provided valuable insights into the details of the insurance market in Ukraine. Despite the challenges, our speakers emphasized that new projects, including energy projects, launched in Ukraine have managed to secure insurance coverage, albeit at a premium. 📈Despite the fact that Ukraine is going through turbulent times, we are already seeing initiatives initiated by the Ukrainian government, international institutions and governments aimed at insuring war-related risks. 💥We are happy to share the results of the event "Green, affordable housing for Ukraine: Let's make it happen! ", held on March 14, 2024 🔑EUEA, in collaboration with EECU, organized this event as part of the SMAERTER4EU project, co-financed by the EU, with both organizations serving as implementing partners in Ukraine. The SMAERTER4EU project, introduced during the online event, aims to catalyze the growth of the green housing construction sector in European nations, including Ukraine. This involves the introduction of EU taxonomy-aligned certification systems for relevant projects and the development of financial instruments to support their implementation. ❗️We were honored to host a diverse audience and distinguished speakers, including Pat Cox, former President of the European Parliament. Mr. Cox underscored Ukraine's unique opportunity to not only become Europe’s largest construction site but also to pioneer a transition from a linear to a circular construction business model. Representatives from SMARTER4EU consortium members, Aleksandra Hedesiu from EnerSave Capital, and Iva Merheim-Eyre from Habitat for Humanity, provided insights into the SMARTER4EU project. They discussed financing tools for green building projects available in Europe and adaptable for use in Ukraine, as well as the support the project can offer stakeholders, including developers and communities. Iryna Sukhodub from the EUEA member company iC consuenten shared insights on green construction certification systems and their positive impact on reducing carbon footprints and enhancing environmental quality in buildings. Volodymyr Smoliy from the Association "Energy-Efficient Cities of Ukraine" stressed that green construction can provide a competitive advantage upon Ukraine and attract private sector investments for sustainable infrastructure development. 🙌We are pleased that the event fostered lively discussions among participants, providing them with a platform to explore avenues for advancing ecological green construction in Ukraine.
