Just over a week ago, our team conducted another MAELSTROM clean-up at the beautiful Gnejna Bay Beach, in Malta! Alongside volunteers from the Nature Trust - FEE Malta and beachgoers (many children!) who spontaneously joined us, we successfully gathered approximately 60kg of litter in just 1.5 hours. What surprised us was that, at first glance, the beach appeared clean, and it wasn't until we began sifting through the sand that we realized the extent of the litter hidden beneath! Most of the waste consisted of plastic fragments, plastic caps and lids, cigarette butts, and plastic snack wrappers which underscores the pressing need to increase civil society #awareness about #singleuseplastics and #plasticpollution. The clean-up was an opportunity to use the latest version of the MAELSTROM App, developed by our partners Gees Recycling and Venice Lagoon Plastic Free, whose beach litter monitoring functionalities have been upgraded under the recently started Mission Ocean project REMEDIES . We wish to thank all the volunteers and those who enthusiastically joined us in this symbolic yet important action! Special thanks also to our partners ISDI and Institute for Sustainable Energy - University of Malta for a brilliant organization of the event! 🔵 Check the video on the MAELSTROM App: https://lnkd.in/dBBUgteq 🔵 More info on the MAELSTROM App: https://lnkd.in/g73ckv5V... “When water is scarce or polluted, or when people struggle for access, tensions can rise. By cooperating on water, we can balance everyone’s water needs and help to stabilize the world.” This is one of the key messages of United Nations #WorldWaterDay. This year's theme is "Water for Peace": #water is a precious resource, at risk in many areas of the world, which can become a source of conflict. Or, conversely, of #collaboration and unity. However, be aware that the problem does not concern only freshwater. Marine #pollution is an urgent threat, compromising not only the health of marine ecosystems but also the availability of safe water for coastal communities. With the MAELSTROM project, we aim to contribute to this challenge. By removing litter from rivers and oceans, we hope that water can become a cleaner source of life for ecosystems and communities! MAELSTROM receives the Sustainability Leadership Recognition in Robotics! While attending MAELSTROM’s 7th Steering Committee and General Assembly in Malta, we were pleasantly surprised by some great news: during the 2024 European Robotics Forum hosted by euRobotics aisbl, our partners TECNALIA Research & Innovation, CNRS LIRMM, and Servizi Tecnici were acknowledged for their outstanding efforts in creating our Robotic Seabed Cleaning Platform, under the category "Developing a Robot to Support Sustainability”! We are thrilled with this recognition, as we believe it is well-deserved for our colleagues who were directly engaged in designing and implementing such an innovative and efficient #technology. The Robotic Seabed Cleaning Platform underwent successful testing in the Venice Lagoon in both 2022 and 2023. During these tests, it managed to collect over 2 tons of waste, including tires, buoys, ropes, wrecks, and single-use #plastics! A special thanks goes out to our colleague Damien Sallé, who was one of the key contributors to the design and development of the system, and which has brilliantly presented MAELSTROM during the European Robotics Forum held in Rimini last week. The #Sustainability Leadership Recognition in #Robotics comes just five months after we received the Atlantic Award (Assistance Mechanism for the Atlantic Action Plan) last October in Porto, Portugal.
