Last week, I travelled to the Department for International Trade (DIT)'s new Northern Ireland hub to meet with key stakeholders shaping local investment opportunities.  Following an early morning meeting with DIT’s newly appointed team in Northern Ireland, I met with NI Minister for the Economy Gordon Lyons and Invest Northern Ireland to discuss the local investment landscape and how we can work together to drive #investment and #export opportunities and deliver a more prosperous future for Northern Ireland. I was delighted to meet with so many brilliant businesses throughout the day and to hear first-hand how they are benefiting from the trade deals the UK Government is striking with countries across the globe, from Australia 🇦🇺 and New Zealand 🇳🇿 to India 🇮🇳 and beyond.  Travelling to Ballymena, I met with green-tech leader Wrightbus to view its ground-breaking, zero-emission buses and discuss its forthcoming investment and job creation plans. I also had the opportunity to meet with Australian company Tribe Tech Group in Mallusk and join conversations with innovative businesses at tech incubator Catalyst in Belfast.  To round off my Northern Ireland visit, I visited the impressive Weaver’s Cross site in Belfast, a world-class regeneration project supported by DIT, soon to be the largest integrated transport hub on the island of Ireland.  It was inspiring to see what Northern Ireland has to offer businesses wanting to grow internationally and to learn more about how we can support people and businesses to #levelup in every corner of the UK.

This week I attended the World Economic Forum and met with investors from across the globe keen to invest in the UK, thanks to our friendly business environment, expertise and liberal economy. Investment in and from the UK has enormous benefits for our economy. From manufacturing cars to creating new, innovative treatments for cancer, investment supports thousands of jobs across the country.   Job support means a boost to local infrastructure and helping to level up the UK, in turn growing our economy to address the cost of living. That's why my key message to investors this week was and remains: the UK is ready and open for investment when you are.

With a far-reaching renewable energy sector, burgeoning life sciences landscape, and world-class food and drink industry, Scotland is among the UK’s leading destinations for inward investment. This week, I was pleased to meet with Ivan McKee MSP, Scottish Government Minister for Business, Trade, Tourism and Enterprise, to discuss how the UK and Scottish Governments can continue to work together to support investors in Scotland. I also had the pleasure of co-hosting an investor roundtable with key businesses at EY and visited US life sciences firm IQVIA UK and Ireland in Livingston, whose recent investment is creating more than 130 new jobs in clinical trial research and development. And in my opening remarks at the World FDI Forum in Edinburgh, I championed the UK as an investment powerhouse, and Scotland’s key role within it to the international investment community. April marks 1 year since I launched the UK Investment Council to provide high-level strategic advice to government to drive inward investment up and down the country.   As a bridge between government and our key investment stakeholders, the Council comprises some of the most prominent senior global investors with expertise across a variety of industries.    I am extremely proud of the work we have achieved over the past 12 months, from strengthening collaboration between our regional investment agencies to support levelling up, to utilising green investment and clean growth to help meet the Prime Minister’s ten-point plan for a green industrial revolution.     Looking ahead to the next 12 months, we’ll be tackling:  👉 How to boost investment in in the UK’s tech and infrastructure sectors, engaging with other government entities like the UK Infrastructure Bank and Export Finance.   👉 Growing the UK’s strong reputation for research, development, and innovation.  👉 Encouraging more green Investment and building momentum towards COP27.  This government remains committed to securing high-value investments to drive the industries which will define the future. The UK and India’s trade and investment relationship is stronger than ever before.   👉Today we announce over £1bn of commercial agreements which will create almost 11,000 jobs in the UK.   👉Our Enhanced Trade Partnership with India has slashed more trade barriers - lifting onerous red tape in exporting UK medical devices andopening up access to India’s £2.4bn import market for UK firms.  👉The Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in India today to advance negotiations for ambitious Free Trade Agreement between our countries, which will be a major step in meeting our ambition to double UK-India trade by 2030.
