The World Ocean Assessment (WOA) is the only global integrated assessment of the ocean.
About us
The World Ocean Assessment (WOA) is the only global integrated assessment of the ocean along all three pillars of sustainable development. It provides a comprehensive global analysis of the social, environmental, demographic, and economic trends affecting the state of the ocean to inform decision-making by Governments, international processes, and policy-makers, thereby contributing to the sustainable management of human activities that affect the ocean. The WOA is the main output of the Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects (Regular Process). It is a continuously evolving assessment that builds on each previous assessment, allowing for knowledge to be built and trends uncovered. Each new edition of the WOA developed so far provides the most up-to-date information on topics covered within the previous assessments, highlighting new findings within key focus areas, and further bridge knowledge and capacity-building gaps surrounding the state of the ocean as a whole. The WOA is a collective multidisciplinary effort by hundreds of experts from around the world and is supported by its secretariat: the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea. The WOA, with its ongoing findings, and related activities has informed the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly its Goal 14 on Life Below Water, as well as the United Nations Decades of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and on Ecosystem Restoration.
