#RCSIBahrain research faculty Dr Edwina Brennan, Professor Alexandra Butler, Dr Manjula Nandakumar and Professor Stephen Atkin led a pilot study on the “Relationship between endocrine disrupting chemicals (phthalate metabolites, triclosan and bisphenols) and vitamin D in female subjects”. As Vitamin D deficiency affects 50% of the global population and is associated with health outcomes including diabetes and cardiovascular disease the study findings suggest that endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), commonly used in plastics and personal care products, may be associated with reduced levels of vitamin D (25(OH)D3). The investigation highlighted that in a cohort of 57 healthy Caucasian women, MCPP is related to 25(OH)D3 in the study cohort, while MiBP and MBP were related to 25(OH)D3 in those with vitamin D deficiency. The observed correlations are surprisingly strong compared to other predictors of 25(OH)D3. Considering that exposure to phthalates is associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease, the results suggest that phthalate exposure may potentiate the effects of vitamin D deficiency and vice versa. As part of the Resident Diaries series, we interviewed Dr Bassam Alhamer (Class of 2020), currently finishing his third year of residency at Pennsylvania Hospital for an internal medicine residency, before going to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) next year for his endocrinology fellowship.   Dr Alhamer advised fellow alumni and students: “The biggest piece of advice I can give for this period is to lean heavily on your co-interns/co-residents. You're all going through the same struggles and being able to fall back on them for advice and comfort is an enormous asset during residency.”  #RCSIBahrain #ResidentDiaries #Alumni #Medicine

Congratulations to Dr Janan Alajaimi (Class of 2023) for winning an award for her excellence in training at Oxford Deanery, UK! Upon receiving the award, Dr Alajaimi shared with us: "During my training, I received an excellent TAB (Team Assessment of Behaviour) and PSG (Placement Supervision Group); these are 360-degree performance evaluations carried out by different members of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) including senior clinicians, junior doctors, nurses, HCAs, PAs, OT, PT, matrons, clinical/educational supervisors, and admin teams. The reports highlighted me as a very professional, exceptionally good, reliable, approachable, compassionate, knowledgeable, hardworking, kind, good listener, cordial, good team player, supportive colleague, and valuable asset to the team.” As for advice to senior students and her colleagues, Dr Alajaimi said, "Follow your passions and keep your conscience the standard, remember that no matter how tough things might be, do not be afraid to jump into these difficulties and do not shy away from hardships, it is through these opportunities we thrive and improve." After participating in the Student Exchange programme, Ms Shada Kodumayil (MED 2) shared with us her journey of academic and personal growth during her enriching semester at RCSI in Dublin. “The exchange programme really has been an incredible experience and it allowed me to meet incredible people, explore a brand-new country and learn medicine in a completely different way. The anatomy practical sessions have been the highlight, and the dissections have given me a greater appreciation for medicine and the human body. Being able to study at both RCSI campuses has been a privilege and I've loved seeing the differences and similarities between them, I recommend the programme to all students, and I hope students from Dublin get the opportunity to explore Bahrain as much as I’ve loved exploring Dublin. It's an amazing city with a rich history and I hope to come back one day. Overall, the exchange programme has been one of the best decisions I've made and I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity.” 🩺🌐 🇮🇪 🇧🇭 #RCSIBahrain #RCSIDublin #StudentExchangeProgramme #ConnectingCampuses

Congratulations to Team Sepsis 5 for winning the Moulage competition for second and third-degree burns by MED1 students as part of the Student Choice week organised by our Experiential Learning (ICSEL) team. During the competition, students had to create a second and third-degree burn on a leg, where they researched burn appearances, how to create them and the materials used to resemble the same look on a manikin. #RCSIBahrain #StudentChoice #ICSEL
