A full-scale offensive on #Rafah must not take place. I call on Israel and Palestinian armed groups urgently to agree to a ceasefire. And all hostages must be released at once - UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e7ir7zJh

Journalists must be able to do their job freely & safely. No matter where, no matter what. Yet, threats & acts of violence are part of daily life for journalists in Central America. It's essential that Governments recognise that there is no progress without a free press. - Alberto Brunori, UN Human Rights Representative of Regional Office for Central America and the Caribbean (ROCA). Our plan to build a safe & just future for every community on Earth - the #SDGAgenda - is being shattered. To course correct, government & business leaders must listen to frontline voices & harness civil society's expertise & creativity. It's crucial so we make informed decisions for the future of humanity. #2024UNSC

Democratic societies cannot exist without a free press. Yet, journalists worldwide face threats, censorship, and violence. On #WorldPressFreedomDay, we’re proud to stand with actor Diego Luna and director Santiago Maza, calling for all States to protect journalists and their vital role in society. Luna and Maza’s documentary 'State of Silence' illuminates the perilous reality journalists face in Mexico, a situation mirrored globally. “When a journalist is killed, thousands are silenced,” says Luna. “Journalists doing their jobs freely means we have access to understand what's happening in our communities,” adds Maza. Let's amplify their stories, demand protection, and uphold the rights to freedom of expression and information. #ProtectJournalists Your voice matters. Suppression, criminalisation & outright attacks of journalists are being met with impunity. This cannot become our status quo. In this crucial election year, we must ensure our Governments protect our right to hold those in power to account & speak out when needed. On #WorldPressFreedomDay, listen to my discussion with Committee to Protect Journalists CEO Jodie Ginsberg to find out what's at stake & why we must urgently protect journalists' safety. https://lnkd.in/dUudYF7n

Disinformation is deepening divides, fueling crises around the world; while free press is under attack. Just last year, 71 journalists & media workers were killed, 320 imprisoned. When we lose a journalist, we lose our eyes and ears to the outside world. We lose a voice for the voiceless. This year, #WorldPressFreedomDay centres on journalists who cover the environmental crisis. As they work to hold big polluters accountable, they can also be subject to threats and intimidation. Today is a chance to celebrate the value of truth - but also to protect the people who work courageously to uncover it. We need independent, ethical & quality journalism now more than ever. We need stronger commitments from governments & media to protect journalists, including environmental journalists, through: -Better & safer working conditions. -An expanded media space for coverage on environmental issues. -The right to work free from attacks, hate campaigns, and physical & legal harassment. https://lnkd.in/ewExseBZ
