After completing a project on orca whales, a class at the school has received a Compassionate Action Award from PETA.

Dosbarth 3 students were recognised for their heartfelt, persuasive letters to the travel association ABTA urging the group to cut ties with marine parks.

Class teacher Cara Sailes explained the children started by watching the documentary Blackfish about orcas in captivity, then did their own research about where some were still kept in captivity. This led to the letters to ABTA and the Spanish government.

PETA corporate projects manager, Dr Carys Bennett, said: “These nine and 10-year-olds showed more insight and empathy for the suffering cetaceans in marine parks than the adults running ABTA have.”

“PETA calls on ABTA to heed their pleas and discourage its members from promoting marine-mammal parks.”

The group is calling on ABTA to update its Animal Welfare Guidelines to add promoting facilities that exploit dolphins and whales to its “unacceptable practices” list.

Travel giants like Tripadvisor, Expedia, Virgin Holidays, and British Airways Holidays have refused to promote facilities that use captive whales and dolphins for entertainment.

PETA notes that orcas and bottlenose dolphins in marine parks are commonly confined to cramped concrete tanks for decades. With little physical or psychological stimulation, they spend their days swimming in endless circles, floating listlessly, or gnawing at their prison walls.

Planting sunflower seeds to sell at St Giles' School, in a fundraiser for Ukraine.

Years 1 and 2, and the school’s Resource Provision class, have been planting sunflower seeds to sell, to help raise money for Ukraine.

The fundraiser was inspired by some map work in class, which included seeing where Russia and Ukraine were.

The children asked about the situation and it led to them wondering how they could help.

It was decided to plant sunflower seeds, also the national flower of Ukraine, to sell for people to grow at home. Money raised will be going to children’s charity UNICEF, currently focussed on Ukraine.

Years 1 and 2 teacher Laura Relf said: “This was completely their idea and they are very proud of their achievement of raising £326.”

Year 13 students from Ysgol Dinas Bran on a challenging trip to the Lake District.

Year 13 students have completed a major expedition as part of their Uniformed Protective Services national extended certificate.

The group travelled to Keswick in the Lake District and completed a range of adventurous activities, including wild swimming, mountain walking, climbing and canyoning.

They had to plan every aspect of the trip and train physically and mentally prior to the expedition.

The week threw the most challenging weather that the Lakes could muster at the group, and they performed amazingly - snow isn’t normal canyoning weather!

Along the way each group member overcame personal challenges and developed some amazing leadership skills.

They are one of the first groups in Wales to complete this unit and they have set the bar very high!

Year 7s at Ysgol Dinas Bran taking part in activities organised by Year 13 BTEC Sport students.

Year 7 were treated to a morning of unusual and fun activities at the school, organised by the Year 13 BTEC Sport students as part of their course.

The pupils got to experience six different activities, with a highlight being the Zorb Football. Other great activities included dodge ball and a blow-up dart board. Students found these activities both challenging and great fun.

They also got to play more traditional activities such as table tennis, touch rugby and tennis. This was a fantastic event, the students taking part loved every minute of it.

Congratulations to the Year 13s involved, it took great team effort to both organise and supervise the whole event.
