It’s easy to abandon your hallway and leave it looking neglected or plain, so one savvy woman decided to spruce hers up on a budget.

Laura Ross, 45 from Penicuik, Midlothian who is a full time mother, told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: ‘My hallway was dark and unwelcoming, with a plain curtain that let very little light in and wooden flooring which needed some work.

‘I wanted something different and fancied a black and white theme to give the space a fresh new update. While I browsed through the Facebook group DIY On A Budget I found some inspiration I liked and saved the ideas to create my own monochrome themed hallway.

‘When it came to finding supplies, I didn’t have a particular design in mind and made it up as I went. I just bought things I liked and worked on fitting it all together.’

Most of Laura’s decor came from Amazon. She started by getting a set of four prints for £12.99, then purchasing a light covering for £45 and three shelves for £15. The clock cost £24.99 from the online retailer, and she also picked up a £29.99 statue, £11.99 black star and £9.99 reed diffuser.

A radiator cover was purchased for £49.99, along with four tins of Frenchic paint in the shade Blackjack Alfresco for £16.99 each. Last but not least there was a blind for £12.99.

Laura then visited some other shops, both in person and online. ‘The wallpaper came from I Love Wallpaper. It cost £16.99 and I used one roll.

‘I got four frames for my prints from The Range, and they were £4.49 each. At this store I also got the cat and dog prints, which were £6.99 each. As I went to leave I saw a flower garland which I thought would look nice around one of my mirrors so I got it for £12.99.

‘I got the zebras for £25 from a lady on Facebook who has her own business, and the zebra head was £16.99 from Matalan. My next stop was ASDA, where I picked up the black mirrors for £8.99 each.

‘At B&Q I purchased some plywood cut to measure for the bottom wall paneling, and it came to £25 in total. While I was there I got a deer plaque for £12.99.

‘In Ikea I picked up a shoe cupboard for £49.99, and in Tesco I got two big tins of Johnston’s paint in a sale for £15 in total.

‘My carpet cost £110 to fit and I am paying it off for £15 a week, the total cost will be £500 including the underlay but fortunately I am keeping my upfront costs low.

‘I got my small table and accessories from B&M. The table was £12.99 and the tray and flowers were £16 in total.

‘All in all the job only took a weekend to do. First my husband painted the walls, and then I painted the rest. I painted all the doors in black afterwards, plus the banister was painted in the same shade using my tins from Frenchic.

‘I added in the panelling and wallpaper with the help of my husband, then it was time to sort out the decorations. I painted the mirrors with Frenchic paint, then hung up the clock and prints. After that I simply arranged my remaining purchases in a way I liked.

‘I felt so happy when it was done as it really does look lovely and fresh. I do all my DIY work myself. My dad was a painter and decorator and taught me well. I must admit I learned from the best. I am sure he would be proud of me if he were still here.’

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, said: ‘Laura’s hallway looks much brighter and very stylish after her hard work completing this transformation. She has also saved a lot of money by doing the work herself or having her husband pitch in.

‘Perhaps the biggest saving has come from painting the walls without outside help. According to Painter co uk, the average cost for a day of painting is £700, and Check A Trade says the average cost for installing wall panelling is £212.50, with a typical hourly rate for a carpenter being £22.50.

‘In total, a day of professional painting combined with a three hour job installing panelling could easily cost £980, so Laura has been able to pocket these funds by going DIY!

‘If you’re going to install your own wall panelling, make sure you know what you’re doing as this job can be complex to complete. The finished product should be strong enough to hold up radiators, shelves or similar, depending on your project. That said, wall panels are a great choice for any home as they can cover up unsightly areas - and they’re also easy to clean!’
