    Story

This JustGiving page has been inspired by friends of Jamie Phelan and the team at BOX CLEVER SPORTS who are hosting a charity night of boxing for Jamie, a 32 year old mum of 4 who is fighting stage 4 brain cancer. The event takes place at The Tabernacle in Notting Hill on Saturday, 19th March 2022. Doors open at 6pm.

Tickets available on EventBrite, copy and paste this link into your browser to purchase: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/box-clever-presents-the-irish-invasion-to-help-jamie-fight-brain-cancer-tickets-252163597107

All proceeds from the night, as well as all of the funds raised here, will go directly towards Jamie's ongoing treatment to fight brain cancer and help prolong her life; in particular, an immunotherapy treatment called DCVax which costs in excess of a staggering £55,000 per vaccine cycle, which Jamie receives each month in Germany. While we hope the boxing event will raise several thousand pounds, it will only cover a small portion of the cost of this specialist treatment, so we are asking you to give what you can on this JustGiving page to help us help Jamie!

In February 2021, three weeks after giving birth to her fourth child, Jamie (32), was diagnosed with Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme, a rare and extremely aggressive brain tumour. Based on the statistics, life expectancy for this form of cancer is approximately 12 to 18 months from diagnosis. Only 25% of patients are lucky enough to survive more than one year, while only 5% will survive more than five years.

Since her diagnosis, Jamie has received chemo and radiotherapy over a 10 month period, but unfortunately, the treatment has not yielded the desired outcome and the disease is still persistent. However, the specialist treatment that Jamie is receiving in Germany can still work, significantly prolonging and potentially saving Jamie's life so she can spend time with her young family.

The treatment is called DCVax. It is a personalised immune therapy made from each patient's own dendritic cells. Dendritic cells are a type of immune cell that function to help the body's immune system recognise and attack tumour cells.

Jamie is 32 years old, wife to Danny, and mother to Liam (7), Tadgh (5), Tara (3) and Fiadh (1) . Until February 2021, Jamie was a fit and healthy woman, and doting mother, juggling a demanding job and a busy household. Just weeks after bringing her new baby Fiadh home from hospital, Jamie experienced concerning symptoms and went to A & E , where she was assessed, given a brain scan, and immediately referred for surgery to relieve pressure on her brain.

Immediately after her surgery, Jamie experienced confusion and loss of speech and regardless of whatever diagnosis lay ahead, she was looking at a long and difficult recovery.Thereafter came the devastating news that Jamie has a tumour that was identified as Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer that is almost always terminal.

She began radiation therapy followed by ongoing chemotherapy to halt the growth of the tumour. Currently there is no cure. Based on the harrowing statistics, time is of the essence if Jamie is to continue to access specialist treatment.

If this treatment can buy her one more day/week/month/year so that she can have more time with her family, then it is invaluable.Jamie is a treasured wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend, and so much more. She means so much to so many. She is kind, funny, self-assured, so laid back she is horizontal, and always up for a laugh! In being dealt this cruel fate, Jamie has also shown her strength and selflessness. She never complains about her situation and she has navigated the invisible challenges of her illness, such as the emotional toll, physical changes, and worry about her children's future.
