Children at Cila primary school in Swansea have been learning about kindness and decided to help the homeless in the days leading up to Christmas.

As part of their studies into kindness and how even the simplest acts can have a huge impact on people, little ones at the school in Upper Killay, decided to put together gift bags of essential items for homeless people across the city.

These have included toiletries, snacks, hats and gloves.

The school said that acts of kindness may also encourage others to repeat the good deeds they’ve experienced themselves, contributing to a more positive community.

The pupils also wrote letters to shops and businesses across Swansea to ask them to donate items that could be gifted to homeless people at Christmas time.

They also created a short video for parents to watch and asked for their help too, the response was overwhelming.

The pupils collected donations from shops, and packed up items into gift bags to create more than 130 parcels for the homeless.

All pupils have been involved from nursery all the way to Year 6, and as one pupil in reception said: “We may be small, but we can make a big difference."

Acting head teacher Vanessa Taylor said: “We are so proud of the children for what they have achieved, they have shown a real understanding that the feeling of giving is so much more rewarding than receiving.”

The parcels are being delivered to Mathew's House in Swansea, which will help to distribute the bags on Christmas Day.

Matthew's House in High Street, aims to be a ‘home’ in the heart of Swansea for those who are most vulnerable.  Its building is known for unconditional hospitality and hope – providing a lifeline for the homeless and others who need it.
