23 years have passed since the adoption of the groundbreaking UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security, which for the first time recognized the importance of women’s full, equal and meaningful participation in peace efforts.

Despite progress, women’s rights around the world are still under threat, their voices often silenced.

Marking International Women's Day on 8th March 2024, a special Inside Out Activation titled “Peace Begins with Her” will celebrate the role of women building and protecting peace around the world. Over 50 large portraits of women peace mediators, activists and peacekeepers will welcome visitors, students and officials at the University of Geneva to honor the role of women tirelessly working for peace around the world. Evidence tells us that wherever women take part in a peace process, peace lasts longer. Particularly, when women are involved in a peace agreement, this is 35 percent more likely to last at least 15 years.

In the current security and political climate it is more important than ever to recognize that without women there can be no lasting peace. From Afghanistan to Colombia, from Cyprus to South Sudan, these compelling images of local woman peacebuilders and UN peacekeepers, will serve as a reminder of the powerful but often shunned voices of women in peace efforts.
