The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will host a conference next week to discuss nuclear safety globally and the progress achieved during the over 10 years since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (NPP) accident.
The International Conference on a Decade of Progress after Fukushima-Daiichi: Building on the Lessons Learned to Further Strengthen Nuclear Safety, will take place from 8 to 12 November at IAEA headquarters in Vienna.
Participants will hold high-level policy and technical discussions on the lessons learned, experiences shared, results, and achievements from actions undertaken by national, regional, and international communities following the accident and identify ways to further strengthen nuclear safety. A ‘Call for Actions’, setting out actions for Member States’ to consider in order to further strengthen nuclear safety, is expected to be presented by the Conference President on the final day.
Over 300 participants have registered to attend the conference, representing more than 66 IAEA Member States and 7 international and non-governmental organizations. The provisional conference programme is available here.
Press Conference:
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi is expected to hold a press conference on the topic of nuclear safety at 15:30 CET on Friday, 12 November, in the Press Room on the M-building's ground floor.

Opening Session and Photo Op:
There will be a photo opportunity with the IAEA Director General and the conference keynote speakers before the start of the meeting at 09:00 CET on 8 November in Board Room B/M1 on the first floor of the M-Building in the Vienna International Centre (VIC).
After the photo opportunity, registered journalists can attend the opening session of the conference from 09:00 to 10:00 CET. A live video stream of the opening session will be available here.
Press Working area:
The Press Room will be available as of 14:00 CET as a press working room on Friday, 12 November.

Accreditation:
All journalists – including those with permanent accreditation – are requested to inform the IAEA Press Office of their plans to attend in person the press conference, the photo-op or the opening session by 13:00 CET on Friday, 5 November.
We encourage those journalists who do not yet have permanent accreditation to request it at UNIS Vienna.
COVID-19 Guidelines:
All physical participants must follow Austrian health guidelines including social distancing and the use of FFP-2 face masks on VIC premises, while working in the designated press area, exiting and entering all gates, in all security areas and in personal interactions with VIC personnel.
All attendees, including journalists, will be requested to complete a contact tracing form. They are also reminded of the host country requirements related to the low epidemiological risk when attending the meeting:
- proof of a negative PCR test not older than 48 hours, or a rapid antigen test not older than 24 hours; or
- proof of a full COVID-19 vaccination not older than 270 days and valid from the date of second vaccination, or proof of full vaccination with a vaccine that does not require a booster shot (e.g. Johnson & Johnson) not older than 270 days and valid from the 22nd day after vaccination; or
- a certificate of recovery from COVID-19 illness not older than 180 days, or proof of positive test for neutralising antibodies not older than 90 days.
In this regard, by swiping their grounds pass/badge, journalists entering the VIC declare that they possess valid documentation meeting one or more of these criteria. They also confirm that they are able to produce the documentation to the organizers or VIC Medical Service, if required.
