IAB UK’s response to ICO’s adtech and real time bidding ‘Update Report’

IAB UK

Following the publication of the ICO’s 'Update report into adtech and real time bidding’ in June 2019, the industry was given six months to respond to the findings of its review of the use of personal data in the real time bidding (RTB) process.

Since then, we have been working closely with our members and with IAB Europe to develop an effective and proactive plan to help companies engaged in RTB to understand and meet their data protection and privacy compliance obligations in practice. Throughout this process, the ICO has been willing to work with and engage with the industry. This has been constructive and informative on both sides and has enabled us to develop realistic and meaningful proposals for improving GDPR and ePrivacy compliance.

In this paper, we outline the process that we have followed, set out the actions that IAB UK and its members have committed to take, and identify areas where we believe further discussion is needed before a clearer position and consensus can be reached.

Maintaining a successful and sustainable industry that operates compliantly requires everyone to be willing to take action and invest in making changes where necessary, within their own organisations and as part of the IAB. We are committed to playing our role in helping this to happen and the industry needs to be too.
