Highland Council to observe Bank Holiday for State Funeral

The Highland Council has confirmed that it will observe the State Funeral on Monday 19 September 2022 and the Council will follow the designated national Bank Holiday. 

All schools, Council offices and service points will be closed to the public. Emergency out of hours services will continue.  Waste collections will continue on that day although actual collections times may vary. Arrangements are being made to facilitate weddings, burials and cremations that have already been booked to take place on Monday 19 September. 

Leader of The Highland Council, Councillor Raymond Bremner said: “As a mark of respect The Highland Council will be observing the Bank Holiday to enable staff the opportunity to participate in the national day of mourning which is an historic event in our lifetimes. On the national day of mourning, it is important that The Highland Council shows its respect for Her Majesty The Queen.” 

Following the Reading of the Proclamation, The Highland Council continues to observe the national period of mourning. 

All Highland Council committees and public facing meetings have been postponed during the national period of mourning. 

Gardens of remembrance will remain open until 18:00 on Monday 19 September 2022 - full details of which are online at www.highland.gov.uk/condolence. Floral tributes will remain at Gardens of Remembrance until after the state funeral. 

Books of Condolence in Council premises are available during office working hours. An online book of condolence is also available at www.highland.gov.uk/condolence 

On the day before the funeral of the Sovereign (Sunday 18 September at 18:00), a lone piper will play the Immortal Memory at: 

  • Dingwall - Remembrance Garden, Council Offices - Piper Alan Hasson
  • Dornoch, Cathedral Green - Piper Willie Fraser  
  • Fort William - War Memorial, The Parade - Piper Margaret MacMaster 
  • Inverness Town House flag pole, Piper Scott Taylor, Highland Council Civic Officer
  • Nairn - Garden of Remembrance - Piper Kevin Reid
  • Portree - Somerled Square, Piper Ian Ruari Finlayson

Flags will be flown, on Council buildings, shortly after 08:00 on Tuesday 20th September at full mast.
