Rebecca is a clumsy, introverted, bubble bath loving, chocoholic who'd rather read a book than go shopping. And don't even mention shoe shopping!

Rebecca is a lucky girl - one of four kids to school teacher parents. Wife to a football obsessed husband. Aunt to the most crazy/adorable little girls. And sister to two very determined sisters and one easy going brother.

Rebecca lives in Canberra Australia and spends way too many hours a day working the day job.

She is a book whore who can easily (and happily) read a book from start to finish in one sitting and spends her spare time writing.

This looks like another somewhat established author shaking up her m/f series with a m/m romance. I didn't read the previous m/f books but I think this book assumes you have read them all and doesn't do a really good job of seamlessly giving any relevant backstory. It does dangle a lot of very annoying threads back to the earlier books though which, if you're inclined to read them might entice you to do so. If, like me, they aren't going to be on the menu, you just have to move along with the story with no answers.

A lot of this book is Ryan and Alex living their life separate. We spend a lot of time getting Ryan's story with his family (without Alex) and Alex living his life with his family (without Ryan) and when Ryan unexpectedly reaches out to Alex, it seemed like Ryan basically reached out to a Grindr hookup and expected total emotional support. (we never really hear how Alex and Ryan met, I'm assuming they were just a random club hookup that was repeated for a few Saturday nights) It was...weird and inorganic and nothing about their relationship seemed to actually work until they start hanging out together and doing construction together which was all glossed over. There was nothing satisfying about watching these guys fall in love....when did that happen? It all happened off page. We get no first sex scenes or romance or dates or anything really. There are two somewhat uninspired sex scenes between them. The rest is implied.

I suppose these are pretty human people but at times, actually many times, I really didn't like Ryan. His inner monologue was just so self centered it was frustrating. His treatment of Zoe (basically "I know there is something seriously wrong with her but I can't help her until I feel like I'm in a better place, mentally") was just ugly. She's his roommate, his friend, his saviour and she is sick with something that needs her to give herself a shot (unless she is doing hardcore drugs and Ryan just sees that and turns his back which is all part of another RIDICULOUS dangled thread for the next book) and he is too up in his head about his hurt feelings (that have nothing to do with her) that he just lets her twist in the wind by herself. Additionally, what is wrong with people? It's strongly implied that Connor loves Zoe and yet when she passes out and cuts her head open Connor and Ryan take her into the house, rouse her (eventually, this was no quick faint) yell at her, watch her and then send her home, mostly alone because Ryan is spending all of his time with Alex at this point. WTF? Are you kidding me? What kind of friends are these? Additionally, when Ryan gets his feelings hurt he ghosts Alex and only Alex chasing him fixes that (although we don't see that happen, another missed opportunity for us to see them interact in a way that they work together to solve their problems)

The writing is really frustrating as far as timeline goes. This book skips time, doubles back on time and ignores time all together. I found it very difficult to follow how much time had passed and at least one area where the timeline had no continuity with earlier parts of the book.

Finally, again, this is probably normal behavior but I couldn't help noticing the vast amount of sexist behavior in this book. The women cook and clean and clear the dishes and the men expect it. Characters are describes several times that they scream like girls and every woman in the book is described as a chick or a tough chick at some point but is still expected to have dinner on the table. These are just the examples that come to mind but the whole book is just riddled with outdated ideas of gender roles and overwrought masculinity.

As a romance book, this wasn't' very good. As a m/m romance book this book wasn't very good

I swear Rebecca Barber does not know how to write a bad book in my opinion,  Ryan and Alex their story makes you feel everything possible and then some, you are rooting for them the whole way and just want a happy ever after.Alex thought she had her life just how she needed it until Ryan walked into it and then she realized just what she was missing, Ryan needed to find himself and on the way he finds his one .

All I can say is READ THIS BOOK!!!!

Breaking Free (Meet the McIntyres Book#4) - Rebecca Barber

This McIntyre family series just keeps getting better and better.

Ryan McIntyre has left his childhood home and moved to Melbourne, to find himself. His housemate, Zoe, yes you remember Zoe from the Finding Your Place Series, has welcomed Ryan to the city but they’re both holding their cards close and although supporting each other there are secrets they’re keeping from each other and their family and friends.

All the fabulous characters from the previous books pop in and out of the story, creating an incredibly real and yet wholly involving story.

Rebecca Barbers story with its witty banter, passionate characters and all round great mix of personalities just endears this rag tag group of family and friends to every reader and makes for thoroughly enjoyable reading.

Now for the final book in the series...... I can’t wait!!!

All the feels….

I started reading Alex and Ryan’s story and I could not stop! I’ve enjoyed each story about the McIntyre siblings. Four brothers and one sister who were always close but family drama, and life, continue to strengthen their bonds. Each story profiles one sibling and their joys and tribulations as they find their “one.” They are definitely romance but also ‘family’ stories as their lives interconnect so closely…

Alex and Ryan are both struggling, in their own unique way, with the reality of being gay. Coming out to his family was Alex’s worst nightmare. Ryan is still working on being completely honest with his. They had a relationship with very strict boundaries so when things got tough for both of them, they were both surprised when they reached out to each other for the support. Each scene, each revelation built on the last, which meant the emotions ramped up satisfyingly slowly. I loved these two. So honest and open, their inner voices were painfully real as they shared their most guarded secrets and fears. I ached for them, as they struggled to be true to themselves while also fearing the consequences.

“Will you be okay?”
“I will be.”

And, of course, family was there for every minute of it. Holly and Ryan. Shane and Alex. All the brothers and sister were icing on this fabulous read cake. I’m nowhere near ready to say goodbye to the McIntyres so I am thankful Connor’s story is waiting to be told…

So by now we're all used to the McIntyre Madness - the loud, loving, alpha males, and the strong, wilful women, who make up this glorious family. Ryan decides to leave them all, move to the city and find himself.
He also finds Alex.
Alex's life is successful. He has a great relationship with his brother. And Ryan is going to turn Alex's world upside down, in the nicest possible way!
Watch them find one another and fall in love in this beautifully written and touching story. And mustn't forget the McIntyre Madness Alex will be drawn in to...

This. Is . It...
The book I've been waiting for.
Ryan and Alex's story.

Breaking free is book 4 of 5 in Rebecca Barbers Meet The McIntyres series.

Breaking Free sees Ryan leave the family farm in order to find himself and live his life how he wants to live it, so he moves in with Zoe....

Poor Zoe, when will her torture ever end? Something is going on with her in this book, but just what that is we don't know. We will have to wait for book 5 to find those answers.

Then there's Alex, who's had a tough time coming to terms with a family rift. Ryan and Alex start out as a casual Saturday night hook up, but soon they both want more... so much more.

I loved every word on every page of this book, Rebecca has a way with words that make the characters come ro life. You feel as though you are right there with them feeling all the highs and all the lows, and I can't wait to read the final instalment and see how this fabulous journey ends.

This book so the 4th book in the McIntyre brothers series and it follows Ryan. Ryan has moved away from his family in kind of a ‘find yourself’ expedition when he meets Alex. While I think their connection was pretty instantaneous, the pair kind of finds themselves in some pretty heavy situations. This book was well written and kept me entertained from pretty much the get-go. There was also plenty of drama, it wasn’t the kind of drama I usually expect from a romance novel.

Alex is the key to Breaking Free

After Holly McIntyre’s story, who knew that her brother had one that was just as equally and socially important to tell? And Ryan is just as vulnerable as the sister he loves so much. He’s been there for his family so far, but now he’s checked out, and it’s his own life he needs to get sorted before he can truly feel at home again. Breaking Free is about Ryan crashing at Zoe’s place in Melbourne and discovering the person he truly is.

For those of us who love Zoe from the Finding Your Place series, you’ll be glad to see she was there for Ryan. She’s been through so much and has grown stronger, yet even in this book, she is still under extreme stress. Yep, we’re kept in the dark, tormented and waiting for her story.

Alex is successful in business and friendships, yet has been let down in the cruellest of way by family. Then along comes Ryan, and everything changes. The chemistry is extreme, “In the early morning, seeing Ryan standing there shirtless and his too long hair all mussed up, knowing it was my fingers that had done it, my blood was pumping.” Yep, their developing relationship is just so beautifully written.

Rebecca Barber writes family and friend relationships that are as unique as the people who make them. She doesn’t define them, or put them into a box. And while this can be read as a stand-a-lone, this book is part of the McIntyre family, and as such, family are there, through and through.

As I read anything that she writes, I actually see the characters doing as described. She is a very descriptive writer, for example: “Reaching the empty kitchen, I stood at the sink, my fingers digging into the stainless steel as I stared down the plug hole pondering my life. I felt like I was spinning.” I’m with Ryan, wondering if he is ok. I see him and feel him as though I’m there, watching his world spin. She has an absolute gift of writing, and as such, I cannot give this book any less that 5 Stars.

Another amazing book in this series. I enjoyed Breaking Free. I have been following this series from the beginning, so I was excited to read this next book. This book is a stand-alone in a series, but can be read alone. This book is about Ryan, which if you read the other books, you have met him. I will say that you have hints to how his book will go if you read Holly’s book.
The plot of this book is interesting. I feel it is important to say that this is a M/M book. Just in case that is not something you enjoy. With that being said, I really enjoyed this book. Each character has their own demons they are facing. If I would have to pick a main theme, it would be that everyone has issues. How you face those issues is what makes you who you are.
I love Ryan. He has a lot of stuff going on in his life, but he still has a good heart. My heart really ached for him many times in this book. He is such a good person, but he had some tough things to deal with. Then there is Alex. I pretty much liked him from word go. He is such a strong character, even when he is facing troubles of his own. I loved how he was there for Ryan. Even when things weren’t great, he still did the right thing and helped someone in need.
The heat between these two is there. I liked watching these two go from just a hook-up and venture into a more permanent area. The scenes between these two was amazing. Their relationship, while rocky, also steamed up the pages at times. I really enjoyed that about this book.
The writing style of this book follows the rest of the books in the series. I liked the dual point of view. The pace of the book was steady. I liked that we got to see other minor characters from previous books. It also set up the next book nicely. I really enjoyed the tough situations and serious topics discusses.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. So far, I have been loving this series. I really enjoyed all the characters and drama involved. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. Zoe is such a big part of this series and I am waiting desperately for her to get her own book.

This is the 4th book in the McIntyres series, and this book is an MM romance. It's not normally one of my favorite genres to read as I find it harder to connect with the characters in some books but I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Ryan and Alex's story. The story was very much based on their friendship that turns to more and of the struggles they both face coming out as gay to their families. I found it rather heartbreaking and emotional that they both on some level feared what others would think and that they both faced rejection on some level. To do that to your own child is so damn wrong and it angered me that so many people do actually face this in real life.
The story was an interesting read that was very well written and kept me wanting to read more. As it does still focus on some of the other family members it's a continuation of a bigger story, but this book can still be read as a standalone book without much difficulty.
A great 4 Stars!

Unconditional Love

Family is supposed to love you unconditionally. And the ones that truly matter, will always love you no matter what.

Ryan took off to live in Melbourne and do his own thing for awhile. He needed to experience life outside of his family. Find himself. Aside from the fact, he's hiding a big part of who he is from all of them.

This is Ryan's journey of embracing who he is and loving himself. Once he is able to tell everyone his truth, he is able to fully become the Ryan he was meant to be. And in the process he finds a love with Alex.

As always the McIntyre's have their drama and we get to visit and catch up with the rest of the crew. Lots of emotion and turmoil, but also love and hope.

Something is definitely going on with Zoe and I am eager for her story. I've waited since the release of Coming Home for Zoe to get her HEA. This release can't come soon enough.

The burden of Ryan feeling unable to share his sexuality with his family has sent him to Melbourne to stay with Zoe from the Finding Your Place series. He needs the time and distance to embrace who he is and what he wants so that he can truly be happy.

Alex has accepted his sexuality however his parents were not as accepting. He has found success in every other aspect of his life but what he really wants is a relationship and love.

There was no denying the chemistry between them but it was when they were each dealing with issues in their lives that you really appreciated the connection they had. This is a story of accepting who you are and realizing that if people can’t accept you as you are then that is their loss. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Breaking Free by Rebecca Barber was a wonderful read and I will definitely be going back to read the past three books in the series.

Alex has known for years he is gay. When he came out to his family, his mom and dad disowned him and now he only has his brother, Shane. Alex is looking for someone to love him as he is and hopes he has found that with Ryan.

Ryan has known what he is for a little while but is too scared to admit it to himself much less anyone else. So when he tells his friends and his sister, they are not surprised, they support him. But when he accidentally tells his brothers and father while having dinner things do not go as planned.

Alex and Ryan are both sweethearts just looking for someone to love them. Yes, they both have their family but that is not the same. They both have their issues when it comes to relationships and I wanted to knock them upside the head a few times. Despite their issues you will fall in love with them because they are just perfect together. When it counts they are both there for one another no matter what, the way it should be when you love someone and they love you.

Everyone just wants to be loved and to have that someone you can count on to stand by your side. That's all Ryan and Alex ever wanted. They find themselves both with heavy family issues they have to deal with. Together they find themselves as they wade their way through their feelings. Can they find the happiness they can cherish forever.
I really liked this story, even though I haven't read any of the others it didn't take me long to love the characters. I so want Zoe's book.

Ryan's book! I really enjoyed him finding himself. He left his family to figure out his life and what he wanted. He meets Alex. Ryan is so great. I love his character. Alex and Ryan's connection is strong. They have issues they have to deal with, but together they break through them. I love the family and how loud and boistrous they are, but they love each other so much. I can't wait for final book.

Loving the McIntyre series, each book focus on one family member
....This is Ryan’s story, who left his hometown to find himself..

This book is full of family drama, that will break your heart, laugh out loud,
shake your fist with anger, swooning moments, and become part their family..

So beautifully written, you can not have empathy and feel everything...
..when the secondary characters are just as important as the main characters...

I am anxiously waiting for Connor story next,
the McIntyre are part of me now..

From the start of this book I couldn't stop reading it. The story line is fantastic and you also get to see what the others have been up too.
A beautiful love story.

This book is all about Ryan finally accepting who he really is and what he needs... Not what everyone else needs, yes finally putting himself first.. Parts of this book hurt, no child deserves to have their parents turn their backs on them for simply who they are. Narrow minded people suck... Sadly tons of people go thru this ... Alex has only had his brother and his business for so long, he’s forgotten what it’s like to have a family ... Together Ryan and Alex build so much, even tho it’s not an easy road...

2.5 stars. I can see where this could turn out nicely, but the book itself needs a lot of editing. My issues mainly lay with the main characters and their love. It's a badly told love story as we get each of their perspectives living their own lives away from each other for most of the book. How did they meet? Where are all the cute moments together? I didn't feel like they were in love, because I was just told they were halfway through the book....and Ryan is a shit friend. He just leaves his best friend in the lurch when he gets with his boyfriend. And there's no explanation for this except that he's in love...so not a fan of him at all. Basically we need to be shown the love story and I'd like an explanation for Ryan's behavior.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.
