Vitae Researcher Development: Concordat Update & Panel

09:30 - 10:30 KG01

Vitae will deliver a interactive presentation to quickly engage the audience with the three core principles of the Concordat, before moving into a panel discussion involving Vitae and BU's Julie Northam and Rebecca Edwards covering different perspectives relevant to the university’s work in support of the career development of researchers.

Overall, the session will enhance awareness of the Concordat amongst a wide range of research stakeholders, and also prime those participating in workshops later in the day on the wider significance of professional development and performance management.

Supporting researchers’ professional development – a workshop for managers

11:00 - 13:00 K101

Participants will explore how best to apply the standards laid out in the Concordat as they relate to supporting their team members’ professional development. Using an interactive approach, this workshop will facilitate a discussion around supporting researcher careers, giving participants the opportunity to share advice, good practice and practical tips for helping their team members to take control of their careers by engaging in professional development planning.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be confident in:

• Understanding what we mean by professional development for researchers, and why it matters

• Recognising best practice in supporting others’ professional development

• Applying that knowledge in their own team

Engaging in professional development – a workshop for researchers

11:00 - 13:00 K103

This workshop will introduce participants to tools to assist them in managing their own professional development planning, exploring concepts, and techniques to assist them in setting, pursuing and achieving their career goals. It will be based around the RDF and how it can be incorporated into their planning to effectively support their career development.

The workshop will explore:

• What we mean by professional development planning

• Why it should matter to researchers

• The core skills and attributes of effective researchers

• How to identify one’s own skills and attributes

• How to approach building a career development plan

By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed an understanding of the key concepts of career development, considered their current skillset, and started to design a roadmap to bridge the gap between the two, using the RDF.

Managing performance – a workshop for managers

14:00 - 16:00 K101

This workshop explores how to manage team members in order to improve performance, focusing on how to get the best out of individuals while balancing the demands of the wider team, the research outputs, and the research impact objectives. The session will help participants understand how to recognise the needs and motivations of their team members and provide them with practical strategies and tools they can apply to support those individuals for the benefit for the team and the projects.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be confident in:

• Creating and maintaining a positive team culture

• Managing individuals and setting expectations

• How to boost team engagement and support mental wellbeing

• How to deal with common challenges in performance management.

Managing your own performance – a workshop for researchers

14:00 - 16:00 K103

This session will focus on the here and now, looking at what participants can do as individuals to improve their performance in their current role. It provides an opportunity for them to focus on their personal skills in the face of competing time pressures and growing responsibilities. This workshop is designed to give them confidence that they have the skills needed to perform effectively.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Develop self-leadership skills including flexibility and resilience

• Build effective time management techniques

• Consider their preferred working style and how to adapt those to a team context

• Learn some task and time prioritisation methods

• Identify how to work more effectively with others

Research Careers Panel and Networking

16:00 - 18:00 KG01, K101, K103

After an action packed session why not hear about career opportunities and pathways both conventional and not. There will be a networking opportunity with refreshments.
