(There Are) No Strangers Here

The film has been made from a one-act play first performed at the Netherbow Theatre, Edinburgh on 9th and 10th September as part of the 40th Anniversary celebrations. It was developed by the One Foot in the Future writers collective which includes Edinburgh u3a members Richard Peoples & Hilary Spiers.

The play is set primarily in Scotland in the near future, at the home of retired couple Agnes and Danny. The global climate crisis has seen a law introduced obliging any family with room to spare to shelter refugees displaced by extreme weather events.

On the day:

The film will be shown from 10.00am to 11.15am there will be a short break from 11.15am to 11.30am. After the coffee break, there will be the opportunity to have a discussion about the play and we will hear from some of the Actors, Writers and Creatives involved.

THE ACTORS:

AGNES is played by Isabella Jarrett. Isabella has appeared at The Royal Lyceum, The Byre, Dundee Rep, The Brunton and Pitlochry Festival Theatre. She has toured nationally and internationally with Winged Horse, Issue de Secours/ France, Scottish Theatre Company, T.A.G., Theatre Babel and Theatre Communicado, as well as working in TV, film and radio.

MARYAM is played by Eve Dagba. Eve was born in Bristol and currently studies biochemistry at Edinburgh University. Her most recent role was in Lucy Kirkwood’s “Bloody Wimmin” at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe. Previously she appeared in "The Roses of Eyam” for Bedlam Theatre. Eve was inspired to start acting by her Granny.

DANNY is played by Paul Wilson. Paul is an experienced Scottish actor. He was heavily involved in theatre in Manchester for many years, but has recently returned home to Edinburgh. He has performed in many plays, worked on numerous short films and narrated seven audiobooks, as well as appearing in an advert at the age of 5!

ZIAD is played by Firas Ibrahim. Firas is a Syrian-born actor and writer who moved to Scotland in 2001. He appeared in "The Enemy" for the National Theatre of Scotland in 2021 and has worked on several TV projects still to be released. He was a winner of the Scottish Book Trust New Writers Awards 2022.

THE WRITERS:

Susan Chaney has written since she was a child, mostly short stories, several of which have been published in various anthologies and read on the radio. She is relatively new to playwriting and says: “It’s been a privilege to have been involved in this exciting project along with my fellow writers.”

Scots fiddler for 40 years, Laure Paterson is an immigrant who found a warm welcome in Scotland, where she has played Scots ceilidhs and concerts ever since. Tours include Europe, America, Syria and Vietnam. She has written a dozen plays performed in Scottish theatre.

Richard Peoples has had more than 30 of his plays staged, mostly in Cambridge, and one at the Actor’s Centre in London. He’s acted in and directed many productions and run workshops and courses for novice and experienced playwrights. Until recently he was Chair of Edinburgh u3a.

Hilary Spiers, another Edinburgh u3a member, is a playwright, novelist, actor and director. She writes predominantly about ordinary older women in extraordinary situations. Her work has been performed across the UK and in Australia.

THE DIRECTOR: Mark Kydd

Mark's acting work includes "Macallan Pioneers", "Leithers Live", "The Lost Lending Library" and "Enlightenment House". TV includes "Clique" and "Outlander". As Director: "1917 - APhantasmagoria", "Don Quixote Unbound" (Twisted Thistle), "Whit Aboot the Wimmen?", "Dancing with Mrs. Murphy", "Moonshine on Leith" and "Sea Changes" (Citadel Arts Group).

THE VIDEO MAKER: Anna Chaney

Anna s a Scottish artist and filmmaker. She graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with an Honours Degree in Filmmaking. Her recent work has including a film of ‘Laurel and Hardy’ for the Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh. Anna is also the daughter on one of the writers, Sarah Chaney.
